SBC SL55 AMG

Finally the inevitable has arrived, dropped my car into mercedes for a service B with a full change of discs with pads and I have been informed of the following.

'Sir your SBC needs changing and Mercedes Benz will pay 50% of the cost"

Hmmm, car is a 2002 registered in November and all advice is welcomed. I'm happy that MB is willing to provide any goodwill whatsoever but the dealership informed me not so long ago MB paid the full amount. But this claim and the last have been split with the customer for SBC replacements.

Other than this car has been great and enjoying the current spate of good weather!

I think getting goodwill on a 10 year old car is pretty good, the sbc lasting 10 years is good considering it's a "weak" part
Mines due an a this next 30 days lets see what transpires

I concur, the Service B appointment was actually 2000 miles early, but wanted everything done before a European tour scheduled for mid August.

The only issue if the SBC failure transpires to be major safety concern, resulting in a lack of braking power.

After buying my SL I could hardly believe it when I discovered that it has fly by wire brakes! I did a fair bit of googling about it, and there are quite a few horror stories out there.

I also remember reading that apparently MB will cover the full cost of replacement on vehicles up to 10 years old, but whether that's true or just an internet rumour I don't know. But if it is true it would explain why your dealer has suggested doing yours now. Apparently there's a counter on the pump that counts every activation, and when it times out you get the red light warning.

Thank you for all the reponses and research. MB are going ahead with the SBC replacement with the following items additional to the Service B as well.

£308.65 service B (supplied own oil)
£71.97 new supercharger belt fitted
£187.85 cam cover fix
£172.86 new rear ball joint
£762.79 SBC unit (including 4.9 hours labour to fit).

When I had my SL55, the SBC was replaced under warranty, no cost to me...

Had a 52 plate 500 which like yours suffered SBS failure. Rang local dealer to confirm my research that it would be covered under good will but rather rudely informed that wouldn't happen. Spoke to my local indy and car was low loaded to the same dealer that afternoon pump replaced FOC. Figure that one out.
