My 2002 1.6 petrol Focus has been using a lot of oil since I bought it a year ago. The other day I noticed it is putting out a bit of blue smoke. With it having the MOT next week i'm worried that it will fail the emmissions test.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the oil usage, any engine additives or a different grade of oil?

You could make sure all the breather pipes and pcv valves are clear if you have presure building up in the sump it can make it burn oil as will old dirty oil you could try a 10/40 or thicker it may help but it sounds like a mecanical issue, valve stem oil seals or piston ring bore wear or dammage from say overheating or just milage and or poor servicing....

Thanks, i'll be servicing it before the MOT anyway so i'll change filters and check for any blocked pipes. It will also be getting an oil change.

Bought the car with a fully stamped up service book but I guess there's no way of knowing how worn an engine is without expensive diagnostics.

Assuming the engine has not been damaged by excessive overheating or what ever?? It could be sticking piston rings, valve stem seals, that sort of thing,"gummed up" by poor servicing. Before considering an engine strip try a good engine flush, cleaning breathers etc.Put FORTE engine flush with the old oil,FORTE GAS treatment in the fuel tank and give it a good long run.New oil & filter and FORTE stem seal treatment in the new oil.I`ve experimented on engines like this and was very surprised at the results using FORTE,I think its good stuff.Like I said at the start it will not replace metal!!it cleans the lacquer and varnish that gums up the rings and valves.

Thanks for the advice. The car is on 106k miles, and is otherwise a good car but obviously not worth a great deal. I'll be working on it this weekend but not willing to throw much money at it.

Its nice to see someone else thinks FORTE is good stuff.Last time I mentioned it in an article here there were sarcastic and negative replies.Trouble is it can be TOO GOOD.?? I put in a knackered old Escort CVH,it cleaned so much crap off the engine components I had to remove the sump to shovel all the "sand" out as it blocked the oil strainer!!.So only use it on modern engines.

The first time I used it I could not believe the results, workimg in the samier end ofs/h retailing i.e. don't spend any thing on it , had some amazing results ,the whole product line is good ,ok I would not say it's a complete cure but for a lot of high milage and also little used stuff it's adamn good product

I could rabbit on about FORTE,making most people think I work for them.
I had a Mercedes in that had been back and forth to the Dealer complaining about the power steering. All I did was put in FORTE PAS treatment and left it to idle for 30mins and gave it back to the owner. He came back later that day saying its a different car!!what have you done?? He was made up and we got a new customer for life.

Could also be the piston rings causing the problem, the oil rings get blocked with carbon deposits. This is a common problem with modern engines and their narrower oil rings.

Didn't get chance to have a look at it this weekend. I've decided to put it in for the MOT tomorrow. Depending on how many failures it receives i'll decide if it's worth fixing or not.

Could do without a big expense as i'm buying a house this month and will be somewhat short of cash.

Well it some how managed to pass the MOT. Maybe not quite as bad as I thought, but I presumed that visible blue smoke would cause a failure. Didn't get a print out of the emissions so not sure how bad it was.
