This is probably a very simple question but I couldn't find anything using the search.

I'm just about to sell my car - once it's gone it'll take me a short while to sort out my finances to purchase a new one so I'll be carless during this time(month or two maximum). I'll have two year's NCB by the time I sell. My query is is: will I still be able to use my 2 years NCB when taking out the policy on my new car?

Hoping the answer is yes otherwise I'm knackered!

Thanks all.

Can you keep your insurance going until you're ready to add another car to it?

Otherwise from previous posts it varies by insurer but it's about 2 years gap max and only take account of whole years, so if youre about to cancel half way through it wont count

If any insurer does not allow this then don't use them. Ususally the maximum gap allowed is two years.

Good point, I will keep it running until I hit the full year - this will more or less coincide with when I sell so not a problem.

2 years gap sounds reasonable, should only be a couple of months at the very most.

Ask your insurance company what the situation is. I was in an identical situation recently and my insurer allowed 6 months.

I will do just that, thanks. The only issue is, you rarely seem to get the best renewal price from your current insurer so I'll more than likely be looking to change providers. I was hoping for some kind of industry-wide precendent but that woiuld be far too easy..

Just keep it going until you get the next car

One problem with that is, with it being so close to renewal I don't fancy giving the current company a full year's premium, then subsequently cancelling and having to pay a hefty fee for the privelege.

ok that's easier.
Keep the current one going until renewal.
They'll send you a reminder make sure it doesn't auto renew
When you get the new car (within 2 years) send the new insurer the reminder as proof of NCD

I was in a similar situation during my final year at university. I was with a company that the presenter to QI does the voice overs for. They informed me that 2 years was the norm, however if I was to come back to them I could have up to 3, although they were not the cheapest it was cheaper than buying a shed just to maintain insurance. Switched after a year with them (didnt fancy paying 40% more despite the extra years no claims) but had no trouble using my renewal certificate as proof of no claims with the new insurer.
