So after thinking about it for a few years (I'd hate to rush into these things), I've signed up for a taster day on Sunday.

Communication has been excellent and I've got a nice list of what to wear and what not to, where to be and when (07:15!!!).

My primary role will presumably be "try not to get dead".

The key question is. What to put in the packed lunch?

I shall report back afterwards if people are interested to know what happens on these days.

Mallory Park. I'd heard the name, but didn't actually realise it was nearby (hour and a bit's drive) until it was offered as an option for the day. Classic Touring Cars I think it is. Sounds like the sort of thing that should be clean gentlemanly racing ....

The Marshals Club do this very well.
The morning will probably consist of a “guided tour” showing most of the aspects that go on behind the scenes at Race Meetings (Race Control/ Scrutineering etc)
After Lunch, you’ll probably be placed with an experienced Marshal to show you the ropes on a live Circuit, with the understanding (as you said) not to end up dead !!

Oh - for lunch usual sandwiches etc & something to nibble during the day, but as a tip – take in one of the Mallory breakfasts at the cafeteria – Generally acknowledged as one of the better offerings on the national racing scene.

Its mandatory to have at least one mini pork pie in your bag. Just check with whoever is mentoring you before unleashing it.laugh

With regard to what you'll be doing, I guess theres no way to know until the day, as every day is different. Hopefully you'll get 'hands on' at some point, just do as you're asked and you wont go far wrong.

Kim

p.s. always fancied doing Mallory Pk myself, but its a blooming long way from the south coast!!

^^^ Private Marshals joke - Ask about it Sunday

Incidentally, I think this meeting is either being recorded or shown live on Motors TV so may be a little different

As luck would have it, on Sunday the CTCRC has invited all marshals & officials to its lunchtime barbecue, so that's one problem solved (I assume you're included in this!)

Forget the advice about mini pork pies - they are useless! Must be at least 100g & a genuine Melton Mowbray pie!

Well I didn't die! I even got to wander around picking up bit's of Marcos.

As was described earlier it was a wander around all the areas of the circuit (mainly listening to a guy called Chris...hind leg, donkey etc wink ), then pick what you fancy for the afternoon and get stuck in.

Well worth doing. I don't think they put me off signing up either.

Just found this thread: I've got my taster day at Silverstone on the 9th of September (British GT/F3).

Must remember to pack a decent lunch (are pork pies mandatory?)

I did a taster day too last Sunday (19/08) at Donington.

Great day, great bunch of people. Got to watch classic Ferrari's from the pit wall and got 'lost' on track for a couple of laps on the way out! Highlight though had to be the afternoon spent on post at Redgate.

Taster days are a great idea from the BMMC, and popular too judging by the 30-odd other participants. The application's in the post!
