*sigh* What car... Classic, 4 seater convertible
Discussion
So, strangely, both myself and the wife are blissfully happy with our cars, which is a novelty!
She adores her old, rattly, faithful Rav4 for the shopping/nursery run. I love my diesel Alfa 159 for the long commute.
Both of us, however, are missing soft-top ownership...
Now, with having a little one, we need a 4 seater - which eliminates my musings of Boxster/MX5/S2000 ownership. I've also got a hankering for something classic-ish, we've got a garage to keep it in, I can pop it on a classic car insurance policy with limited mileage, it should be cheap.
Money is tight, I'm thinking maybe £2000-3000. I just want something for occasional use, which has a good look and feel to it. My head says Audi 80, something like this:

but I'm not sure it's "special" enough? We've had an E36 328i 'vert but the wife found the unreliable roof to be frustrating and is refusing a new one...
Classic beetle maybe, not exactly a drivers car?
2 seater classics seem easy, 4 seater, not so much.
Help!

How about a mk1 Golf? For example:

ETA: Oh that one's an auto, but still there are plenty out there.
This one is maybe nicer: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4069877.htm

Not classic per se, but how about a Volvo C70?
Or perhaps a Celica?

This, with the standard wheels back on:

Hardly any of the cars pointed out are classics?
And a stag is hardly 2 to 3 k..from my recent perusing you need to treble those numbers. You raise an interesting point though.most of these cars are 20 years old and older whereas in 1990 I would have pegged something from 75 as classic...despite it being younger than these mentioned.
When does a car become "classic"

I had a 306 Cabriolet (don't laugh) which I really liked. It's a bit camp, but a good-looking car all the same, plus they're very cheap now.
Trouble with a convertible which is 'Classic-y' is that the roof (most likely to be a fabric one) is going to be a bit tired. Electric roofs can also be very expensive to repair if they go funny.
What about an E36 328i Cab? On the BBS wheels, there's nowt much better I can think of which has classic looks. It would be top of my wishlist, if I could afford the insurance!
