£200 to spend on road wheels……..suggestions?

A couple of weeks ago I had an ‘incident’ that tore my rear wheel to bits, so I now need a replacement. I was running Shimano RS30’s, which are quite a nice, compliant and reasonably stiff set of wheels – if slightly on the heavy side at 1,950g’s

I wondered if anyone has any experience of the following, or can offer any additional suggestions, budget is up to £200;

Azonic Techlite Alloy wheels, very light at under 1,500g’s

i'd go with fulcrum 5s too to be honest, i have 7s which are fine if a little heavy but they do roll very nicely. Alternatively you could get some 105 hubs built onto mavic open pro rims if yuo fancied the custom route. Mavic Aksiums are worth a look too.

Just replace your rear one if nothing wrong with front, but keep the budget more or less the same. That way you will get a bigger advantage when you replace the front too. Just got a Hope Pro 3 built onto a Mavic Open Pro from Wiggle for £160 and it is nice - 915g so a lot lighter than what you had.

Don't go for factory build wheels as they can be hard to replace spokes etc for, you always want your LBS to be able to do you a quick and inexpensive fix on any wheel problems.

I am in the process of buying some new wheels and spoke to Harry Rowland today. For £280 you can get a pair of Mavic CXP33 rims, with Novatech hubs and a decent spoke count. I am going against the trend in the club of buying factory stuff but I know that a few quid more will get me a wheel that will last me years and be fully serviceable.
