Music for the middle aged

Whilst out in my convertible yesterday, I was listening to some of my favourite tracks (not loud, but with the roof down you can't help but have others listening to your music choice). It got me thinking: from the yoof of today's point of view, what is more embarrassing/acceptable for 'your dad' to listen to in public?

Some old track (School/Supertramp, Comfortability numb/Pink Floyd, Werewolves of London/Warren Zevon) or stuff which is now playing on R1 (I've haven't got a clue what that would be )

Yes, I'm a man in his 40s with a convertible.

Couple of years ago I drove through a large town in France in my parent's Saab soft top enjoying the gentle strains of Steel Panther. I assumed not many people would understand the lyrics...

Strangely did not go for Rock the first time round in my youth.. ( Im 50 )
Now however, give me The Who, Queen, Aerosmith, ZZTop, ACDC and the like, and once I get the stereo in the convertible I will share, these and more with the outside world. Currently enjoyed within the Air-Con interior of my VW.

I have a habit at singing ABBA but love the 60s 70s stuff that you bellow out.
Although it's best not to when sat on a bus, with eyes shut and someone has to nudge you to shut the fk up.

Other CDs in the car include lots of P.J.Harvey, Howlin' Wolf, The Gang of Four, Hawkwind, The Standells, Joy Division & The Beat off the top of my head.

Yes, you're clearly right. I mean, official RAJAR stats show that 'only' 11 million people listened to it in Q1 this year...

Usual selection when the roof is off the TVR....Billy Idol, Clash, Stranglers, Numan, Depeche Mode, Pink Floyd....varied is a word I'd use, others could be more harsh

I don't know anyone who listens to it. In fact most people I know would be offended if they were accused of listening to it.

The 1812 Overture at stupid volume while belting through the Downs between Hungerford and Marlbrough was entertaining.

But it was usually either something rock n roll like AC/DC, ZZ Top etc or something from the 90s indie period - Stone Roses, Charlatans, James etc.

You need to visitwww.billnelson.com His new album "Joy Though Amplification" should be up your street. I can also recommend "Atom Shop", "Fancy Planets" and "After the Satellite Sings" although that is out of print. Some of Bills Album's since "Red Noise" are being re-released. "Quit Dreaming" and "The Love that Whirls" on Universal and Cherry Red are re-releasing "Luminous", "Northern Dream" and others.

Thing is that the most listened to show is Chris Moyles, and he's been dropped from breakfast specifically to get them back into the target demographic as he appeals to too old a listener. Once you're over 25 you should apparently enjoy Steve Wright and Jeremy Vine.

No one should EVER have to listen to Jeremy Vine.
Smooth FM and on DAB , is worth a try, Simon Bates, Kid Jensen, Mark Goodier, Pete Waterman, Emma Bunton,Andy Peebles,Lynn Parsons.

Its Like Radio One from the 70's and 80's DJs. Gets a little repetative after a day or two, so Steve Wright in the Afternoon, although it is currently Chris Tarrant sitting in for him, so getting a bit more Rock than normal.
