Typical. Beautiful day. Roof off, heading down to see my folks in Dorset, Thought I had driven over somthing small, but it turned out (after the temp soared) that the drive belt had come off. This was because the bolt that hold the crank wheel (pulley?) had fallen out.
Costing me a small fortune to get back to Surrey since my s
te RAC cover only included (my fault for not reading the small print) 10 miles recovery.
I turned it off straight away, so pretty sure no damage. Did seem to be a bit of oil on the chassis below the pulleys though which seemed odd?

oh and being by the side of the road with a broken down TVR seems to bring out the Neanderthal morons it really does. I was barely able to decipher the insults some where saying they had so few brain cells.

When I was at the side of the road when the clutch hydraulics let go at least I didn't get any abuse. Did get a panda car stopping alongside in a queue for the lights. They just stared at me! Remember breaking down in my Saab 7 years ago on Purley Cross roundabout and car of cretins laughing at me. I took solace in the fact that, at some stage in their life, they will break down at the side of the road and hopefully they will remember the moment when they laughed at somebody else

I had about equal amounts of stupid comments and offers of help when i overheated. It was just the otter switch had failed so just sat for a bit to let it cool down before topping up the water, shorting the otter with a paperclip abd carrying on.
One guy in a van pulled up and told me he was a mechanic with all his tools in the van and offered to help foc.

Well I had a feel (blister on finger now) and the bolt isnt there, SO the question will be did it fall out or shear.
Luckily the car was only just bought from Fernies so I am sure the boys there will sort it.
Slow drive back tomorrow with Mr AA man.
Oh and the RAC can FRO. Hideous experience on so many levels you would not believe.

All as bad as each other I am afraid. I had a run in with the AA a couple of years ago and after 10 years of membership binned them off and am with the RAC now. I have no delusions that they're not all the same though; play them all off against each other at renewal time. They're more interested in loans and getting you to join their wine clubs than they are helping you when you break down...I really could not believe the verbal abuse I got when I broke down (dodgy electrics).
Not something I could ever do to anyone; and have sympathy when I see a breakdown.
But that said, then very best advice I got here on PH back in the days when it ran on .txt files was to join the AA. Best investment I ever made

As the bolt dissappeared, the woodruff key on the crank may have sheared, the pulley wouldn't spin, water pump wouldn't turn hence overheating.
If the pulley was loose and moved forward, if it was a serp engine, you could loose oil pump drive and if the pulley moved forward, oil could escape out the front crank oil seal!
None of it good.

Not their fault as the bolt could have sheared any time or not at all but that's why you paid the dealer premium!
Ed, sorry to hear of your woes. Haircutmike is right, can't see fernhust letting you down here so I wouldn't worry too much. Not their fault as the bolt could have sheared any time or not at all but that's why you paid the dealer premium!
