ANYONE SAILED A SQUIB?
Discussion
Hi. Sailed a flying fifteen for a while, great fun but cockpit is not big enough really to take the family out. Was wondering if a squib cockpit is any bigger? What is performance like? Noticed that they are quite weighty. A few squib have got outboards fitted as well, not really an option on the fifteen. Cheers.
I used to sail one of the my yacht club's Squibs occasionally years and years ago when I was training the junior sailors, as they are slow enough for kids to learn how to trim properly without having to worry too much about cpsizing.
They certainly won't set the world on fire and are very forgiving, so would be a good family boat for kicking around in. The cockpit is a pretty decent size on them.
Have you thought about a Wayfarer instead? Slightly bigger, slightly heavier, but can be kitted out for both cruising and racing. Some of them also carry an outboard on the transom (only 2hp or so, though).

There is lots more room in the cockpit of a Squib. My dad had one for years and we used to go out regularly with 3 adults without being cramped. It'll fit a family of 4 relatively easy.
Performance is enough to have some fun. As other posters have said, the heavy keel makes them quite forgiving so you can throw them about safe in the knowledge that you aren't going to tip.

Squibs are great little boats, sea worthy, don't topple over and more than enough room for more than the racing 2.
I sailed one in Cowes Week last year and was so impressed with the all round performance (especially in the heavy winds) that I agreed to crew on one again this year.
They have a fantastic travelling circuit for racing, and the social side of things is very friendly (especially the mid fleet club)
Highly recommend.
