This has been a bad 18 months!
Discussion
Well, my 4.6 has been going great guns in the last several months after a handfull of problems involving a few engine swaps!
Just when I thought it was safe, coming back from the ring, 30 miles from home the engine starts a light tapping. I continue slowly and by the time I get home the noise is greater and I have convinced myself that I have a loose adjuster on an adjustable pushrod!
Pulled it apart and yes, on exhaust No 7 there is about 4mm valve clearance!!!
Checking has revealed the following:
No adjuster loose.
Pushrod the same length as others.
Valve stem heights all the same.
Theory;
Can a solid lifter break down?
Solid lifter worn on the base?
Can't be cam wear as it is still lifting 0.5" and play is on base of lobe.
Reassembled after speaking to Rob V8D, reset tappets, took for less then 10 mile test and it started again!
Could be stripping down now but frankly, I don't give a dam
Where's that can of petrol, (do insurance companies read PH?).

Sorry to hear it Pete - hope it's not those pushrods
I'm just about to whack them in my 4.6!
Time to go back to hydraulic??

My thoughts exactly!

If a solid lifter has broken down somehow, I guess I will have to pull the engine, strip and flush regarding swarf etc.
I can't face looking at it for a few days. When I do, I'll strip the inlet manifold and pull the lifter and then..............
From what we spoke about earlier on the phone
If you got 0.5 " on the lift that rules out cam wear
If the rod isn't undoing it's self and staying the same length that rules that out
Can't be the heal of the cam because there is no load from valve spring pushing on that part
Proving your rockers are ok it can only be the lifter collapsing
I think your going to have to pull a lifter out
