Noticed for a while the aircon wasn't overly cold and assumed I needed another recharge. This morning I switched on the aircon before firing the engine and noticed, without the sound of the mighty AJP or stereo cranked to 20, that when I push the aircon button, the blue light comes on, and I can hear a very slight 'thud' (solenoid?) but not the metallic 'plink' that normally accustoms it. Is this an easy fix? Any suggestions (please consider carefully my known technical ability before replying)?

NB If any of you find some of my technical terms a little taxing (specifically 'thud' and 'plink') then don't be embarrassed to drop me a PM via my profile and I will explain these in layman's terms without the need for you to be made to look a fool on PH in front of your peers smile

The metallic ping is the clutch on the compressor engaging. If the gas is low this won't engage - hence no ping. The blue light however will still come on.

At best it needs a re-charge. At worst the condenser has a hole in it or a leak in the system. All I know is that it's beyond your incapable hands.

Don't let C--t fit touch it. Get a proper aircon specialist check it over.

I know an excellent A/C guy near Rusper who sorted my Cerb's A/C. He's by the Russ Hill Hotel if you know that.

Is there any real reason why Kwik fit should not do a straight recharge? They just connnect the machine and enter the values. Is there a real risk here?

From memory it was £40, and no fee if it didn't work. Not tried them myself, but like you said - what's the worst that could happen?

Well, I had them do it about 3 years ago, and it certainly reinvigorated the system. However, I don't think I've ever had the aircon serviced so I guess taking it to a specialist for a proper service once every 3 or 4 years is a good idea.

Only downside is that his place is down a pretty crappy farm road but if my pampered Cerb can get down there I'm sure yours will be fine.

Not sure where the aircon valves are on an AJP but on a S6 their beneath the air box, no way I would trust Kwik fit with removing that

First off check your clutch doesn't disengage on a regular basis.

Fire the engine up and turn the AC on. Watch the front of the AC pump and if it pops off regularly then check the thermostat in the drivers foot well. Just above your right knee when sat in it. You may need to pull the lower trim panel down or out to get to it.

If when it cuts out you don't have greater than 10v on both terminals then the stat is set too high and will be causing the pump to shut down.

At the front of the engine between the V on the AJP, nothing needs removing as far as I know.

Seriously Matt, how long have you known me? hehe Stat hasn't been touched in 9 years and temp has never been an issue (in fact, it could probably be turned cooler a bit).

I've got Hawesy & Steve at mine Saturday morning err, 'helping me' :cough: fit new coolant pipes. You're welcome to pop in and check the AC if you like wink

hehe Thought I'd kept the explanation fairly simple....

I'll see how I get on but I've got a clutch that needs removing this weekend.

I now have 4! including the one in the car.

Will be doing some research on friction discs and pressure springs for possible cheaper replacements as what I have found so far is quite interesting!

Also going to look into the slave cylinder seal system to try and prevent seal failures and also the set up of the master/slave ratio/travel to try and prevent the release finger failure.

I had a £25 voucher. "Oh no mate we'll drive it in. Numpty over there has driven sports cars and everything" meant he'd had a driving package at thruxton which culminated in 3 laps in a tired old ferrari, so I drove it in.

Ham fisted with the hoses, they went to drag them over the floor then over my paintwork until I stopped them, then they managed to force the wrong hose on the wrong side, breaking the little tyre valve thing inside, meaning before they'd even started all the gas was coming out. Now you'd think a tyre place that did aircon would have one of these little tyre valves, but oh no, "thats special mate, you need a stainless one which we aint got", so having done the best at screwing up may car, they decided they couldn't do it and it was no charge.

Nope don't go there.
