Thoughts folks..

I bought off e-bay(should know better) a 3COM ADSL Modem for my new broadband access. I've got the modem 3CP3647 which it turns out is really old and was obsolete in 2001. Anyhow it boots up and says it has a connection and I've set it's IP address but can't connect to it etc or ping it. However nowhere in the manual does it even mention PPoA etc so I don't know how I can authenticate with my ISP. Or am I supposed to user a router for that.

My gues is it is so old you need to use something else to autheticate the connectiion... Probebly a case of file in the round file after getting money back from seller or negative feedback.

What do you lot think?

Sorry to hear about that fish , I too use Ebay (bought Road Angel 2 off there), but I would never buy any PC stuff, cold comfort I know,,,, I don't know a lot about the modems, but I have a router which my BB provider, provided for me (eclipse.co.uk)
It may be worth biting the bullit and asking your BB provider for advice about the best equipment for you, they may even talk you through what you need to do to get set up again.

Hi Fish.

I use eclipse for all my home users. They are very good.

I recommend using a Netgear DG814 or equiv, as works very well.

How does your current connection work? is it a USB modem, or through a network RJ45 cable?

Trouble shooting broadband for my home users has become a mastermind subject of late..! let me know!

Fish, if you want an ADSL modem for a tenner plus 2 filter thingys, give me a shout. My ISP is doing an offer on them - its the Speedtouch jobbie.

I've got one. USB connection, piece of cake to install.

Always a good idea when buying computer kit on eBay to get the model number from the seller and then do a Google search on it.

Have you located a manual for it? Perhaps that can help you set it up.

Otherwise, put it back up for sale on eBay. That's what I do on the occasions I've bought the wrong bit of kit. Even if you get less for it than you paid, every penny it goes for is less that you are out of pocket by.

As you suspected it looks like it doesn't have a ppp client built into the dsl modem( never seen one like this). You might be able to run ppp on the pc. This appears to be an ethernet to dsl bridge???

Probably easier to stick it back on ebay and go get yourself a DSL router(with built in modem).

I don't like using the word modem when talking about dsl cause it isn't and people think you can send faxes with them and dial the bank and....

Did the seller advertise it as a 3COM 3CP3647? If so, it's not really fair to expect the seller to refund you for something bought in error.

No offense intended or anything. It's just that I sell on eBay as well as buy and had one American woman ask for a refund because the VHS PAL tape I had sold her, which clearly stated it was PAL, wouldn't play on her NTSC video recorder. I very politely pointed out that it wasn't actually my problem and fortunately she was very understanding and agreed, and also added that she knew someone with a dual standard VCR and would watch it on that.

Anyway, the point being that your seller probably advertised a 3COM 3CP3647 and you bought a 3COM 3CP3647. If they had advertised a bang-up-to-date brand new top-of-the-range ADSL router and sent you a 3COM 3CP3647 then perhaps that would be more of an issue.

Was it expensive?

Nope and it will no doubt find the bin. The only advertising bit was fast internet connection...except now because everyone uses PPoA it's sort of non existant connection..

Ah well, live and learn I guess. eBay can be a veritable minefield sometimes.

I have a 3COM dualconnect (both USB and Ehternet) - was no use as a router but is hardware compatible with the OfficeConnect series. Flashed it with the officeconnet firmware and now it is a proper router (disables the USB port though) which is now plugged into my WAP.

Don't know if your homeconnect is quite the same but if you can't get your dosh back then a quick google on the subject might turn it into something vaguely useful instead of a doorstop.
