Hi guys, never done a 'what car' before as I always know what I want, but this is for my Mum...

Luckily, she's very few requirements so it's a bit of an open field...

Main criteria, £3-4k budget...

She has used my sisters 1.2 2007 Polo a few times and likes that size, fuel economy and general 'feel' of the car

She wants 5 doors, but isn't too fussed to be honest

Basically it leads me to look for a 5 door Polo, Probably a 2006 for the budget...

But, she's banging on about reliability and stuff like that and it just made me think about these £99 a month leases that seem to be available, if she can get a brand new 'something' for £100 a month and have it three years it's going to cost her £3600 and in effect get nothing at the end, but might this be a good idea? It'll be new, shiny and in warranty and the other usual perks of leasing (free tax and servicing? I don't know?) could be a good idea

It's not that she can't afford the £4000 to buy one, but she just wants ease, and simplicity and doesn't really need the stress of what a second hand car MIGHT throw at her...

So, what you think? Buy or lease!

I'm not sure why people find having to actually look after a car stressful, providing she keeps a car serviced regularly by a trusted friend or decent garage then most modern stuff in budget would be reliable.

If she really wants to just stick fuel in and forget it then something like a C1 or UP on a 2/3 year lease would be a good bet.

Sounds like heading to a local dealer for something new on the drip would suit her requirements best - not a very traditional PH, but to be fair, I dount your old dear is going to get involved in DIY oil changed and sourcing MAFs on ebay...

Sounds like any small modern hatch will do - probably a case of visiting local mainstream dealers with her, sitting in a few and seeing what finance / service deals are flavour of the month. It's what I did for my mum. She ended up with a Kia Soul.

This multiplied by a billion. It is a car specifically designed for the task of moving around the mums and friends of mums of adult children.

If she likes a Polo, go get her a Polo. Low capacity Petrol engine should go for quite a while with out giving any bother smile

You should be able to get something with a decent warranty for that budget too. Maybe 6 months? Indy dealer would probably get something better value IMO smile

Christ, she's only 48 guys and is a fairly young mum so I'm not sure she's ready for the Honda just yet!

Thanks for the input guys, I'll have a look at some lease companies and see what's what

Jazz is popular hence holding prices very well.

Better value is the Colt CZ2 5 door.

The diesel one uses a Merc' 1500 diesel.

Avoid the automatic version.

I think the question is, in 3 years time when you've spend £3600-4000 + deposit + servicing + non warranty items what will you do?

Will you want to sign up again for another 3 years on a similar scheme (assuming there is one), or will you buy the car, re finance it, or hand it back and buy a cheaper used one?

I'm not saying this is a bad idea, but it's certainly not the cheapest way to run a car. And just because it's new doesn't mean you won't have trouble with it either.
