924/944 steering column UJ

Hi,
My 924 is having some work done currently (thumbs up for Carrera Engineering in Nazeing, by the way...) and they mentioned that there's some play in the upper UJ on the steering column.
Firstly, what's this like to do as a DIY job?
And secondly, does anywhere know where I can get a replacement UJ shaft from? I'm told they're currently out of stock from the usual sources otherwise I'd probably get it done while the car is up on the ramps.
