Got a VARTA 680 CCA type 72(?) from local motor factors.
Started playing up after just under 2 years. Replaced FOC by the shop - no messing, no quibble.
Had it about 6 months now and still fine. I did have the starter off last year and gave it a good clean up and spray with electrical restorative, this after 'spur' gear lazy to disengage.

I bought this one earlier this year. Nice fit and seemed to be a good compromise for the Ah and CCA ratings.

I think it depends what you want, i wanted the positive terminal to sit away from the chassis and therefore the layout was fine for me, cables reach fine.
My positive terminal has a number of connections for the charge lead and amplifiers for the stereo so that was another reason for having it towards the outer of the car - its less awkward!

Wow - that is really a poor life for a Red Top considering the price. How did it die?
I'm interested in battery options; I fitted the one recommended on mytuscan.com recently but it was too big for the tray. Bodged it in there but it was only
later that I read that people have to modify the thing to get it to sit in there properly by filing the plastic tabs.

Ive bought a few batteries in my life and have now resigned to paying a bit extra and buying off of a large retailer like Halfrauds.
I once purchased a battery online and it was a dud. Wouldnt hold a charge. Even though they are guranteed the gurantee isnt worth a w
k to be frank.
You cannot send a used battery by post and the only way they would send a replacement was if i went to an independent battery specialist got it tested, had a report made out and then sent the report on to them.... what a load of tosh, what independent battery retailer will do me that favour bearing in mind I purchased the battery elsewhere?.
I complained within the first 2 months of having the battery and all they came back with was 95% of batteries that are logged as faulty are not....
Anyway, peace of mind, 4 years no quibble gurantee, a local halfrauds up the road, £100, job done.

One thing that i have fallen foul too though is a garage putiing the wrong battery back into your car if its removed for any reason...i paid £100 for a halfords battery when i first got the car, and at some point my new battery got replaced with something else...when it failed earlier this year and i arrived at Halfords i was dumbstruck to find it wasnt a halfords battery and i was screwed!!! I had to pay all over again but the guys did give me a discount as i had the receipt for the old one.
As regards the battery fitting - i had to remove the side tabs too - your only other choice is to buy a smaller battery - but finding smaller one with equal power output without paying a huge amount of money is unlikely!!
My battery went pop earlier in the week. Fortunately I was in a retail car park close to a Halfords and they put this in for me http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...
Really impressed, the car has never started as well. The battery feels amazingly powerful. It was a bit touch and go as to whether it would fit, but it just did (without any mods). + terminal was closet to the engine on the old battery but the other way around on this one. The cables were just long enough to accommodate this.
Considering it took the Halfords guy almost an hour to fit it, £6,99 for fitting was a bargain!. Particularly with AA breakdown insurance which means the overall cost ended up being £35 whatever. With a 5 year warranty, it's a no-brainer.

I put the same Bosch battery in my Sagaris over a year ago. Seems perfectly fine, and +ve is now away from the chassis. Five year guarantee was the big attraction. Getting the old one out was by far the biggest challenge. Two to three hours with a very small hacksaw blade cutting throught the rusted solid bolt. !!!!Really impressed, the car has never started as well. The battery feels amazingly powerful. Perfect starting from cold and hot (with a new starter that helps...)
Hi,Perfect starting from cold and hot (with a new starter that helps...)
Just bought HSB096 Bosche battery from Halfrauds, and it looks too big to fit space, did u have to modify side lugs?
Dave
Hi,
Had to shave off 5 mm from the side lugs to get the battery in, it was the original TVR battery on it from 2001, not bad eh!
Tusc starts before key is turned now, lol, real major difference, even the speed of closure on alarm / windows
Bonnet conversion next, just ordered hinges off Mr Chips, engine cleaning here we come
