deleted picture recovery?

I recently loaned my son a spare Canon EOS400 for a trip to Borneo,he was scrolling through the menu to delete unwanted images and has deleted all the images of his time there.Is there any way to recover the data as he is devastated.
All help would be extrememly welcome.

Don't use the storage media again (until you've completed this process).

Download a copy of Photorec or Recuva (both are free) and run them against the storage media to recover the lost files.

Try Recuva. Don't put the card in anything until you have installed the software and then run the file search. I'd be surprised if most of it wasn't recoverable assuming that data hasn't been written over the top of it.

I did the same thing somehow and used Pandora Recovery to get everything back. Lost filenames and date/time stamps but got all the photos and the EXIF data so didn't lose anything important.

As has been said above, don't write anything to the media before recovering stuff, but if you have then you should be able to get something back as long as you haven't written more than you did before.

Am I correct in thinking that these programs only enable you to see which files can be recovered under the 'free' banner but you then have to pay for the proper version to actually get the pics back? I was doing something very similar yesterday but couldn't find a complete solution that was free. I was only looking at Mac versions though so no idea if Windows ones are different?

I've used the Sandisk recovery software in the past, it comes free when you buy a memory card (not sure if it's only certain ones?). I guess it would work with non-sandisk cards.

OP, I might have an unused code (for downloading it) kicking about somewhere (since I get a new one every time I buy a CF card), want me to have a look for it?

No.You are not correct. Photorec and Recuva are both free (as in beer) to download and use, although there is no support channel for free versions. Photorec runs on Windows, Mac & Linux (amongst others) hence my suggestion to use it.

Recuva is, ISTR, windows only.

Each time you buy a Lexar Pro memory card you get Lexar Image Rescue with it for free, and I think the same is true for Sandisk. Hence if you can't find anything online but need a new memory card...

Recuva - gets my vote! It has recovered files from in camera 'formatted' cards for me.
