Gentlemen,

I am a potential M5 E61 touring buyer but before taking the final step I need some more advise.

I already checked the buyers guide and it gave me some very valuable information; thank you so much!

First some more info: I'm a Dutch expat living in Spain, so the car is in Spain. That's vital info, because people treat cars here differently and dealer assistance is definitely not what you are used to in either the UK nor the Netherlands.

The car is a full spec, individual, bronze-metallic July 2007 Touring and it has 90.000km on it (56.000miles) It looks like new, both on the inside and the outside.
It was owned by the director of one of the Barcelona BMW-dealerships, so it's very well maintained. The books confirm this, although I haven't seen invoices yet. The last time it was in the workshop for service was at 88.000km and idrive confirms this.

Now here's the trick: this service was done nearly 2 years ago. Over the last 2 years it hardly drove 2000km. The trader I want to buy it from says he's had it for more than a year; in the current financial climate, no one wants to buy a car like this so he can't get rid of it. (good for bargaining!)

So here's the deal: I can buy this beautiful, well maintained BMW M5, but I don't know where it's been for the last 2 years and I don't know what to do with a car that hasn't been on the road for a while. I will contact the local BMW dealership and ask them for advice, but I would like to hear your opinion and how do you think I should treat this car, bearing in mind it hardly drove for the last 20 month.

I did contact the previous owner for information of the car (original clutch and other repairs) but so far I didn't hear a thing. (this has to do with the mañana-culture, and the fact that cars simply aren't that important here I'm afraid)

Thanks for your comments in advance.

If the car otherwise checks out OK I wouldn't shy away from it. Budget and bargain for an oil change, a brake fluid change and a battery change. Make sure the brake discs haven't corroded more than normal through lack of use and that the tyres haven't become permanently flat-spotted or have dry rot cracks appearing between the tread blocks (unlikely). Where was the car stored - inside or out? make sure all electricals work as they should. If independent dealer warranties in Spain as as valuable as they are here (virtually worthless) look very closely at everything and bargain hard.

Cant you buy a UK car and drive it to Spain? Obviously the RHD vs LHD thing might sway that idea but at least you'll be able to find a half decent car.
