A colleague of mine wants to be able to monitor some critical services on a server of his. If necessary, he can RAS into it and restart the service or reboot the server if necessary.

Anyone got any ideas? He has NO sys management software loaded at all, and the budget is tight.

Thanks in advance,
Greg

(I'm thinking of some bit of software that could send SMTP to a phone or something...)

Something that monitors the event log and then SMS's through an internet gateway like Genie?

I think our stuff is overkill, and outside of his budget, but if the service is actually terminating he can improve the robustness by setting up recovery rules. If he has any COM access or similar to the service then he can also set up a scheduled script to confirm the service is still working and either tell him, or restart it, when it isn't.

What service do you need to monitor? We use a cheapo bit of software called "watchdog" which can monitor most TCP-IP based services.

It tests (for example) to see if our website is serving a page. If it isn't it can be configured to do any number of things (including run a batch file, send emails, call a pager etc etc.)

Also tests all our mail servers, and our FTP site, and our internal IIS server, etc etc.

I think it cost us about 79 dollars or something ridiculously cheap like that...

Oh god, now you're asking!

Netwin software

The site looks cheap and cheerful, but I can't fault it, we use version 3 I think and it's never had a problem in 4 years...
