Adult Circumcision
Discussion
I've come to the conclusion that after 18 months of abstinence ended in the most spectacular fashion by meeting a new lady who has an incredible sex drive, that circumcision is perhaps the right thing for me. I suffer from fairly regular minor tears and have been to the doctor who has hinted it may be necessary but thought I'd ask the question here to see what the consensus is.
I would like to know what sort of time schedule I would be looking at post-op (difficult I know as everyone heals at different rates so only very vague figures) or any other potential issues.
It seems to be a topic where the responses are either a) do it, it's the best thing I've had done or b) it's ruined my life.
Any advice or information would be very gratefully received!

First of all, let me say that the Internet is packed with (usually American) rabid anti-circumcision "facts". Most of these are either typical Internet bandwagon trolls, or men who are angry that they were circumcised as babies and now hold a grudge out of all proportion. There is a lot of "the grass is greener" in their opinions.
My foreskin started to tighten when I was 18 or so, and by the time I was 30 it was getting uncomfortable to say the least. After a minor incident that I won't go into, I got referred to the urology department and the result is that I don't have that problem any more (NHS waiting time was only 6 weeks). To be honest, I was glad to get rid of it, and it worked wonders for my self confidence and my sex life.
I chose not to have a general anaesthetic (bit of a phobia about those and I'm not squeamish) so I was in the hospital at 8am, and out well before lunch. I imagine a private surgeon would be even more efficient. As the anaesthetic wore off, it just felt really bruised, no OUCH that you might expect. That came the following morning as the irritation of healing skin caused the obvious early morning stimulation. It is not a bad sensation to wake up finding someone has given you a US porno flick specification todger, even if it does look a bit of a mess.
In short, it took 10 days before - how can I put this in delicate terms - I was able to take it for a personal test drive. The dissolving stitches were the biggest problem, causing a prickling (no pun intended) sensation every time things decided to perk up. 14 days is probably the soonest I could have used it for the designed purpose. that first time though... Oh my.
I should have had it done years before. Most partners (Casanova I ain't) don't really notice, but of those that do, they all appreciate it. Even with regular showers, circumcised ones tend to be inherently cleaner and capable of more sustained direct stimulus. I found it feels much more intimate and sensitive in a good way. Condoms are much less of a hassle.
I hope I didn't cause too much leg crossing there!

Are you suffering from tears because it is too tight?
If so you may find that daily application of betamethasone steroid cream and daily stretching may relieve the tightness and prevent tearing going forward. Otherwise yeah, circumcision may be your best option.
And I say that as one of the rabid anti-circ folk that Zad mentions.
Without wanting to start a debate, Zad most of us are simply against routine circumcision of infants, adult circumcision where the person can make a fully informed choice is just fine and a rather different kettle of fish

An Ex had it done at the age of 30ish
He was an Ex at the time so I can't comment on 'recovery' but (as he was single at the time) I was the one he asked to take him & look after him for the 48 hours after the GA
This was 10 years ago, but I have over-riding memories of a crown of thorns, his new nickname was Jesus

Yep, I don't have a problem with that part at all. It is a peer-pressure thing which seems to exist purely to generate cash for paediatric urologists. Sadly, numerous vocal trolls have extrapolated this into some sort of obsession and are preaching to anyone who will listen that all males bodies are mutilated blahblahblah, giving many men a self confidence problem. I think it should be the choice of the owner of the penis concerned, and certainly not the choice of the mother. A warning. You know what it is like when you get a new car and want to try it out all the time? Yeah. That. Only in this case it isn't a penis substitute. Once you get it up and working again, it'll need running in for a bit, but you'll have a new toy to play with and, lets face it, from the time in life that you discover what your boy bits are for, they are any male's real favourite toy, and someone has just given you a convertible sports car. Depending on how tight the skin is (UK circs aren't usually that tight) you may need to use lube for solo enjoyment. What a revelation THAT was when I discovered it. Also: Going commando. Yep.
Something I forgot to say. In the bump the hospital gave me to read about keeping clean, painkillers etc, they said to wear loose boxers. Absolute rubbish. Leaving your injured best mate to flop around is a bloody stupid idea. Nowadays boxers tend to be more supportive though, but at the time I found my cricket jock perfect for stopping things moving around.

I had it done (due to phimosis) a little over a year ago aged 22.
I can assure you that the thought of the operation (they're going to do what to my penis!?) is about a million times worse than the reality.
I was put under general aesthetic (thankfully - would hate the idea of a local and being awake during it) and woke up about 30 minutes later all sorted. You assume that it's going to hurt like hell when you wake up, but it really doesn't. In fact, the pain throughout the recovery process is relatively easily managed by the basic painkillers (paracetamol/ibuprofen/diclofenac).
You'll probably need a bandage around the stitches (self-dissolving) for a couple of weeks to ensure everything is kept clean and healthy. The reality of having stitches in your knob really isn't as bad as it sounds. In fact, the worst bit of discomfort is your freshly exposed bellend rubbing against your clothing constantly (I'm sure there's a nicer way of phrasing that, but I'm tired), but that passes after a couple of weeks.
I was back in action after around 6 weeks (+/- 2 weeks is probably about the norm from what I've read). Glad I got it done as everything feels as good as it ever did and no more worrying about potential para-phimosis (Google it and shudder!)
It's worth noting that circumcision should always be a last resort. Your doctor might mention solutions such as hydrocortisone cream or even a preputioplasty. Neither of those were suitable for me, but the doctor is the best one to advise.
In summary, if you need to get it done, then just get it done ASAP - really not that bad. I would be tempted to book the week after off work - not because of the pain, but just because it's nice to be able to lounge around on the sofa in really baggy clothing.
As an aside, you would be amazed as to how many people who've had this done in adulthood. I know of three of my mates who've had the same operation in the last couple of years and I suspect there are a couple more who have never mentioned it.

I had much the same problems as a teen, but was too shy/scared/embarrassed to talk to anybody, but as time went by, and I thrashed away at it regularly, everything slowly loosened itself up. Now, some 35 years later, I can store a handful of loose change in it and nobody is any the wiser.
I had phimosis and Fucidin cream sorted it out in short order! Within a couple of days the tears had healed to an extent that they didn't get worse when I pulled it back.
Had it only a week or so ago again and the cream did its job perfectly, three days and all fixed and no tears since.

Just to add an alternate side; my best mate had this done a few years ago due to foreskin being incredibly tight. I asked him whether he regretted having it done. He said that it was better (due to less minor tearing) but that if he'd been able to, he'd rather have kept his foreskin. He's lost some sensation as a result of it and he said that using the toilet for the first few weeks was 'interesting'.
Yeah the bruising temporarily narrows the urethra. On the plus side, I found that when it settled down I effectively had a hands free device, if you see what I mean. I was quite impressed when I discovered that trick. Oh come on, don't tell me every time you need a pee in the shower you get out...
The sensitivity issue seems to vary from person to person. Previously I was possibly a bit over-sensitive and with any stimulation the glans got a bit sore quite quickly. Now I just find that I can really enjoy it for much longer.

Personally my wife (and I) like the foreskin although I am nowhere near the record for storing pound coins
