I often hear this term but I'm not 100% sure what it means.

I believe an Elise is an example of one?

So what does it mean and what other examples are there?

The front and rear bodywork on an Elise is one big bit that can be removed.

ETA: Picture of a Delta S4 to show what it means:

Does the original bonnet on the new mini count? Current model I believe doesn't lift the headlamps.

Also, ref Delta S4 - were most group B cars not like that?

Well, imo, they are 'true' clam shell cars as they open up "Like a clam". However, I am so biased about Strato's that I'm off the scale.

hehe

I'm never sure whether a car with a separate bumper really counts.
