964 and main dealer
Discussion
Just had a very unpleasant visit to my main dealer, parked my 964 outside my local dealership to try and organise a service, and was totally ignored, 2 guys serving customers , fair enough, three other blokes merrily typing away did not even see me, no " be with you shortly" or anything, anyone else had similar treatment from dealerships, is a 964 too old for them to want to deal with. My car has 100% main dealer history and want to keep it that way
Ok some questions which may or may not make sense given I don't know your OPC.
Is this the dealer you always use? - Is there a 'guy' you normally speak to there?
Do they not have a 'reception' ? - or indeed a separate service reception?
and following on from previous posts on numerous threads here ( not only OPC specific ) if a main dealer or indeed anyone appears to not want your money when you're stood in the door ready to throw it at them vote with your feet....
and yes air-cooled cars need to be looked after by people that were there when they were new...

I took my 968 to an OPC once a few years ago (purely to take advantage of a special offer) and am currently in the market for a 964.
After my OPC experience I'd actively avoid a 964 with OPC history. Their response to being confronted with a 968 was largely bafflement and a suggestion that I take it to certain local indy instead because they don't really know what they are doing with the older cars any more. Yes, seriously!

I'm always somewhat perplexed by these "I went into a showroom and was ignored" threads. Presumably having made the effort to get there and wanting the stamp, you went up to someone and talked to them? What happened next? Or can you not be the first to speak on principle?
I get that it's not the greatest welcome in the world, but it's a car shop at the end of the day!

I have purchased two cars with full OPC history, an duly trotted both down to the OPC for servicing in order to keep the service book up to scratch. However on both occaisions (too different OPCs) the mechanical work has fallen well below what I consider to be basic competence. The first car immediately after purchase some 6 years ago was given the full 24k service at Kendall. Some £700 later I drove away and the brake warning light can on within 1 mile of the centre. It required new front pads and I was absolutely aghast when told that brake pad wear was not checked during a major OPC service. (the car was a fabulous 3.2 some 16 years old at the time)
More recently I took my recently purchased 993 c2s to Bolton OPC. Again a full OPC history car I considered the few pounds extra for the OPC stamp to be money well spent. (they also supplied a frightful Caymen for the day) i drove away with my wallet suitably lightened only to find that they had not put sufficient oil in the car. 2 more litres were required when I returned to the OPC.
So basic mechanical knowledge seems to be lacking at OPCs for older cars, not to mention the rather snotty attitude that you have to cut through on order to be taken seriously.
My 993 is currently having a suspension refresh, screen replacement, and front end paint at an Indie, I am working diligently to stay busy until her return. Until then I am bereaved.

That being said if I was running a 964, I'd be taking it to an indy who know there onions with the older air cooled cars. They're generally much cheaper than an OPC and if your worried about having the OPC stamps in the book for if you decided to sell I would think that lot's of buyers of a 964 would actually prefer to see the stamp of a respected indy!
O/P I think you are mad quite frankly. Entrusting a 964 to a franchise and technician that in all likelihood have never serviced a 964, dont know what they are looking at never mind how to maintain it and almost certainly would stick 'Porsche approved' 0W 30 oil in the motor just baffles me. Give your head a shake and use a good indi who knows what they are doing.
Hi,
In fairness to Porsche centre's there are some that have got really experieced technicians on older models.... OPC Wilmslow have got at least 3 techs that have been there 20 years plus who know the older product really well.
On the other side there are obviously indy's that can look after the car as well or better than an OPC.
Just find one that has got the right technicians working there.

That being the case one wonders why you bother. So basic mechanical knowledge seems to be lacking at OPCs for older cars, not to mention the rather snotty attitude that you have to cut through on order to be taken seriously.

But more importantly, does their approach indicate what type of treatment the car will "enjoy"?
