is an MK2 S or a 4.5 rebuild faster then a 996 TT ?
Discussion
I thought the Mk1 S was the fastest of all the T cars, especially with CR box and 3.91 diff.... and I would have thought it could at least keep pace with a not far off two ton M3... A 996 Turbo might be a different proposition tho due to the big difference in torque...
Some who have the 4.5 upgrades reckon they'll leave a 996 Turbo behind, and also give a 997 Turbo a run for it's money too, but the 997 Turbo has to be one of the quickest out there that you're likely to come across..
Interested to hear of actual battles... I struggled to keep up with a new RS6 on a dual carriageway the other week... 5.0 litre V10 vs. 4.0 litre SP6...

I had a run with a 997 GT3 a while back in my 3.7 diff equipped 4.0 mk1 and could just about keep up in a straight line, but it was hard work.

We have a Nissan GT-R as well as the Tuscan 2S, and in normal everyday use, the GT-R feels quicker than the Tuscan (see my other thread on sprint gearing...). This is due to 4wd meaning you have the confidence to use all the power, even when not in a straight line, the turbo urge, and low down torque (in auto, the GT-R switches into 6th at 35mph!).
It's only when the Tuscan is really given its head that it feels quicker. My feeling is that in a Clarkson-style runway drag race, the Tuscan would pull away, but on real roads it'd struggle against the GT-R.
I'm no expert on Beetles.... errrr, sorry, I mean 911s, but aren't recent turbos pretty analagous in performance to the GT-R?

A standard Tuscan would stand no chance against a standard turbo (996 or 997). Would a modified Tuscan beat a turbo ...? A modified anything could beat a turbo if it had enough money spend on it so a bit of a pointless conversation really!
I wouldn't say pointless conversation but pointless post...It's obvious that any car, if you put the money into it, could beat the Turbo in a way or another, but I never asked that.
A 4.5 rebuild added to the price of a Tuscan S brings the price closer to a 996 TT in pretty good conditions and mileage hence the comparison.
The other part of my post was aimed at a comparison of other powerful cars that can be driven very fast much more easily then the Tuscan S.

So how come real world 1/4 mile times for Tuscans and standard, ie non X50, 996Ts are pretty much the same? I accept the 997T is in a slightly different league. With the right driver, IMHO a Tuscan is quicker than a stock 996TT. It certainly should be given the weight advantage it has, and it does feel much more responsive than the relatively lazy power delivery of the 996. As has already been said, the Tuscan S is comfortably faster than a 996, but obviously the TT is a different beast.
With an average Joe driving it is a close run thing. Whilst I can typically get point to point quicker in the 996 it is much harder to have fun whilst doing so, and it feels much slower.
What I also know is that my Tuscan has cost me a LOT more in maintenance over the years than the Porsche has - but if it came to selling one, I also know which would go!

My post wasn't meant to br sarcastic. I have owned a Tuscan S and 997 turbo and the turbo, although stupidly fast, was a bit too clinical which is why I ultimately sold it. My experience with boh my TVRs wasn't the greatest, but on its day the Tuscan was more of a laugh to drive - unfortunately for me that day didn't come too often. It's obvious that any car, if you put the money into it, could beat the Turbo in a way or another, but I never asked that.

I don't think you can pay too much attention to quoted 0-60 figures as some companies over state and others are more conservative!
I've got a Sagaris, and previously had a few Tuscan's inc Red Rose, Cerb 4.5, T350C etc and I also currently use a 996TT as my daily s
tter, and as much as I would love to believe that a 4.5 Speed Six would be faster, there is just no way. The 4WD traction of the 996 also means the power can be deployed in a wider range of weather....
Notwithstanding this, I'm still thinking of getting another Tuscan to use daily instead of the 996TT

I just spent Sunday at Crail drag strip with a load of different cars including other TVRs, Porsche, GTRs. To give you an idea there was a 996 turbo there and I have a 4.3 Tuscan mk2 .
1/4 mile results
Porsche 12.244@118.7
Tuscan. 12.623@123.3
It was my first time at the track with the new engine so was pretty pleased with my time, although I found it a lot harder to get the power down at the start compared to when I had the standard engine.
