Recommendations for road use cycling shorts?

I've looked back 15 pages and can't see a thread about this so I'm looking for suggestions for cycling shorts for use on a road bike, cycling to work and stuff but not too tight Lycra stuff! I'm mid 50s and overweight so I don't think I'm a skin tight Lycra type person! I've seen some baggy shorts but they are mostly aimed at mountain bikers.

I use a pair of Endura Hummvee shorts with a liner on my MTB and road bike. Slim fitting enough not to flap on the crossbar and in the wind, but not lycra tight!

Having said that I have just bought a pair of proper lycra ones for the road bike as they can get a bit hot and feel restrictive when you are going for it. (Going for it by my low standards that is!)

Nike bib shorts off ebay are best for the um larger figure!

Thanks, some ideas there... I can see the idea of bib-shorts but presumably they are all skin tight? I used to do the lycra 15 years ago when I was 3 stone lighter. That's when I was doing triathlons

For riding to work I use humvees.. Would scare people in the office turning up in my bibs alone!

Do you put a bib short, without pad, under the Humvees?

I use bibs (witha pad) whenever i'm riding - for mtb under baggies.. - for road, on their own :-)

If you're self-conscious about lycra but want the padded patch, you could always wear whatever lycra road shorts you find comfortable, and then pull on a pair of football shorts over the top.

M&S super lightweight chino bike shorts.

Add padded boxers/bib shorts underneath if required.

They have an "Active Waist" (read elasticated) which means they are comfy on the bike, they fit well enough not to flap about, are not to warm in the sun and dry quickly if you get caught in the rain.

For £20 per pair they are hard to beat and do a better job than lot of cycling specific stuff at double the price.

To be worn with boat shoes, an oversized t-shirt, and a floppy haircut.
