soft top problems
Discussion
hi all, 986 boxster, my soft top stoped working with a large bang mid cycle i can hear motor running and driving lefthand side, so assume it`s the cable drivers side that has snapped, also both short rods with ajustable end cups have broken,i can buy a secound hand motor and cables but the car they came off was a 2000 year part num 986.624.117.00 does anybody know if this will fit my 1998 car, thanks artdon
Sounds like the same problem we had, the roof was mid cycle and a large bang.
We were just down the road from the dealer at the time so we called in and asked them their opinion. They wanted £125 to look at it and told us the mechanism had broken and whilst it was disassembled we should get both sides done... about £250 per side!!
Feck off I'll look at it myself.
Raise the rear cover, look down inside and you can see the broken plastic end of a short metal arm. That arm is bolted on at one end and the plastic bit is a push fit on the other.
Took about half an hour to replace (make sure you adjust the length of the new part to as close as the old one) and cost about £30.

Hi, why not just buy new cables..?
The platic end caps are designd to break off in a roof overload. They cost around £40 each.
The roof gearboxes are going to need timing to each other once new cables are installed.
You will also have to remove the gearboxes to fit new cables. Quite a fiddly job and outside the scope of the average diy owner.
