Does any one know of where I can get my Impreza noise tested prior to an up and coming track day? I don't want to turn up only to be told its too loud (the static limit is 98db). I live near Windsor, so anywhere within reason would be useful.

If you have an android phone there is an app called Sound Meter. It uses the microphone input from your phone to give you a sound level in db. It will give you an idea of where you are static noise wise.

The other way is to pop to Maplins and buy yourself a proper sound meter that has a sponge on the end of the mic for £20.

For both devices make 2checks. Once at 0.5m away from the exhaust and level with it, and the other 0.5m away and at an angle of 45deg. For both checks the rpm should be half of your maximum revs so if you redline at 7000rpm you should aim for 3500rpm steady state (held) when doing the test. That should give you a fairly accurate result.

What you can't account for is how loud your exhaust is when you're on the track and you've got the taps open at full chat and the engine under load. You could still get chucked off for exceeding the noise limit. there are noise meters placed around different parts of the track and the marshalls may well decide regardless of noise limit your car is too loud.

Just don't go to Bedford Autodrome although it's a fabulous track. The noise limits there are woefully low and if your car is only very mildly modified (basic exhaust mods) you might still get chucked off. Crappy situation to be in if you've just paid £200 for a trackday and they don't give refunds!!

What set up do you have. See my STi in my garage, which was 96db at the standard 1/2 meter.

Thanks for the tips. I've just bought a sound meter off Amazon for £19.00 - hopefully that will solve the issue. If any one else wants to test their car and is local, just let me know!
