I have my car booked in to have the gearbox oil changed and have a message saying that the sump plug is a seized rounded ball that will need to be drilled out or a replacement sump. Is that correct? I was under the impression that it is a sealed for life gearbox ond the oil needs to be sucked up the dipstick tube.Any body know for sure?

Assume this is the 1997-2002 X308?

In which case it'll have the Merecedes W5A 580 gearbox. This has a conventional drain plug in the sump and is filled via a ready fitted tube at the back of the engine bay. The sump has to be removed to change the oil filter so if the plug is FUBAR'd then it should be a simple job to drill out the old one once the sump is off and fit a replacement.

Someone might get a bit messy removing the sump without draining the oil first though...

The idea of sealed for life was that it didn't need to be changed in the period we are prepared to sell you a warrantee for.
MB are just as bad, B8's Merc had the same box and the local MD also swore that they never needed changing. Someone once posted the MB service sheet number suggesting a change but I couldn't find it anywhere when I was arguing with them.

Yes Steve, it's the XJ308. Just collected the car after chains/tensioners and waterpump change, apparantly there is a allen head bolt that's rounded off,so will need to either drill it out or replace the sump.
