Cheap "Performance" Diesels?

Have any car makers actually made a performance diesel car yet? Closest I've seen is the 335d, but since it's auto only I'm not sure it can truly be called a performance car.
What about that M550xd that BMW released recently? Not even close to the OP's budget though! I think the term "performance diesel" is used to describe a diesel with a decent bit of shove, rather than a conventional performance orientated engine, if that makes sense.

Depends on your definition of performance. If it is 'the fastest model in the range' then Skoda Fabia vRS Mk1 is it.s_zigmond said:
As above, but with a hybrid turbo, Water/meth and FMIC for 250bhp + and 450 lbft.
That's an awful lot of petrol tied up in those mods, not to mention the fact that you will be spending quite a bit of time and effort managing clutches and gearboxes. Just buy a better car in the first place?StottyZr said:
The 888s are under 5k now?
Not yet - but I didn't want a bunch of uber new suggestons (i.e. I want cars I could realistically afford now or in a few years!)VolvoT5 said:
I'm not sure I would consider a MG ZT CDTI a 'performance' car, even for a diesel.
It wasnt the performance I was thinking of, more of the "focus". I.E. the 888 has fancy brakes / suspension...RWD cossie wil said:
