The 350i was recently treated to a new stealth cam and followers etc and all was nice and quiet. Just before the trip to the BBWF I noticed a tapping from the top end at idle which got worse as the oil warmed up and the pressure dropped. All the preloads were checked and were fine and I suspected a dodgy follower. After stripping off the rocker covers and running the engine I found the noisy one and a little side pressure on the respective pushrod made it much worse. It turns out that it's the hard metal insert into which the pushrod locates within the rocker that's the problem. It moves around and depending where it is it alters the effective length of the pushrod.frown A replacement rocker fixed it. Well at least it was an easy fix but I was wondering if anybody else has come across this problem before?

Simon glad to hear you found the source of the noisy rocker! I'm interested to hear your thoughts on your new Stealth cam ?

Those rocker pads are st.

Loads of chatter over in the Chimp cage about them.

Make sure you double check what you've bought, the genuine new/old stock rockers are top draw.

The after market ones you get from Land Rover parts suppliers are where the problem is.

Often the pads just fall off yikes

I'm quite happy with the cam. The engine's not standard though. It's a 4.6 with decent heads, 45mm trumpets etc and running Megasquirt II injection. Previously I had a stump puller from Real Steel and I found that far too tame. Compared to the Stumper the Stealth has lost some bottom end torque, as you'd expect, but it still idles smoothly, the CO and HC are low, it has good manners for daily driving, and it pulls like a train from just under 3K to 6K when you give it some.

These are the standard items. It's not the pad on the rocker tip though it's the other end, the domed area where the pushrod sits. There's a steel insert in there as well and it's that that's moving around.
I bought some "upgraded" steel rockers and shafts and the quality was as you said. The fit on the rocker shaft was so bad and the finish of the rockers so poor I didn't even bother to use them as the old ones were much better. Fortunately I had an old used rocker assembly in the parts bin so I nicked a rocker off that to fix my problem.

Is the situation still as bad now as I bought those crap ones a couple of years ago? You can still get the original parts from LR but I'm not paying those prices! A good source of these parts at a reasonable price would be very nice. I'll have a wander over to the cage and have a poke about.

Ah right I was at the wrong end of the rocker for a minute there, I guess it just shows the after market rockers are pants at both ends.

A mate of mine got a set and they were hopeless as you can see.

Seems you did the very best thing possible by fitting the salvaged rocker from your parts bin.

If you don't have such a parts bin I think the only option for quality rockers at a decent price is either take a trip to the breakers yard or call a trusted RV8 specialist like Rob Robertson from V8 Developments, I expect he has a stash of good rockers.

It certainly looks like obtaining quality rockers at a reasonable prices is getting very tricky these days.

Hi Dave. Sadly not. I've followed the recommendations of several knowledgeable forum members on different oils etc and made no progress. Looks like the engine and box will be coming out soonfrown
