leather lifting?

Just Done It... its a dash out job. not to be recomended for the faint hearted..

Basically, as the dash does not expand/contract with heat, unlike the leather covering it, at some point in time, the leather will lift up from a concave surface.
As a result, I am not sure that even if you remove the dash and recover it, the leather will not lift again in the future?

True...
But, if you do take the trouble to take the dash out and Carefullty and I mean carefully peal the leather of the dash, you will find that the raised parth of the dash arround the drivers area, is padded, and the depression on the passangers side is basicaly leather to fiberglass, and there are stuck using a spray on contack adhesive, having spoken to a local leather trimmers, I managed to remove all the glue from the dash and the back of the leather (took a few hours to do properly) I then reglued using a much stronger impact adhesive, this should now stay PUT.. for a while.
a few tips on what I found when doing it .
1) Don't tear the leather when pealing it of, it should not be that well stuck, but you don't want it to end in tears..
2) Make sure you get ALL the glue off both serfaces before even thinking of regluing. as they say its all in the preperation, so dont skimp (as if you would
) the last thing you wish is to have a small lump of old glue left, once the dash is reglued.. IT WILL NOTICE 3) I managed to streach the leather on my dash before regluing, basicaly I soaked the leather then pulled it as taught as possible accress the dash Clamping it in place allong the screen edge, thn put a couple of heavy phone books on it to take up the recess, N.B. put a thick towel on the dash first otherwise the books leave nice straight prints in the leather
leave overnight. Repeat once more, don't overdo it as it may spoil the leather. I found only a small amount say 10mm helped lots when trying to reglue it. 4) Aply a stong contact adhesive to both serfaces VERY thinly, you don't what ridges in it, as they to WILL show.
Do the normal procedure with the gluing, it goes without saying you only get one shot, else you have to clean it all up and start again..
5) Once glue replace clamps and leave with the books on to make sure its stuck.
6) Lastly after all this abuse, give the leather a GOOD feed, with something like conellies (SP) leather food.

It actualy sounds more dificult than it is, it just requires one to be carefull and have lots of patience.
Oh, and have lots of coffe to hand
basical be slow and methodical.
hopefully it will be sunny this weekend and I will be able to finish of repairing the wiring and get the dash, out of the house back into the car

And mine, three miles from dealer in mild sunlight. Smoothed it back by hand, hasn't lifted since. Leaves a worry if ever in sun-drenched plains of Spain. Car would melt and fall apart here in Los Angeles. 85 to 110 degrees depending on which side of the city you live. Scorchio!
did meet one guy once, where it had all lifted across the dip, when i mentioned it he did not even know that the was suposed to be a dip there, untill shown

thanks guys, had an idea, if i can stretch the leather by say soaking it, then by using a fine needle and srynge, i could try injecting glue underneath the leather and rollering it around, then weighting the leather down till the glue dries.

Don't bother tried that, drilled a hole or two in the Fibre glass underneath squirted with glue, and prayed...
DID NOT WORK, just gave me more glue to clean of when I didi it correctly.. also glue needs air to set (usualy)
EDIT TO add:- i would be very woried about putting a hole in the leather, it may split when streachng in, also it will open up under the pressure
I would say do it the dash out way or leave it, having tried both ways...
