Not sure if this is the right forum or whether it should have gone in sports?

Anyway, going on holiday to Ibiza next week and always have a fish off the rocks. Never really had much luck but always see others doing ok. I never fish in the UK so I basically don't have a clue beyond setting up a rod and casting it out there. Fish are only small so I'm assuming smallest hooks possible are best? Usually use bread or sweetcorn for bait but this obviously isn't the best option given my past failures

Any tips much appreciated

I would expect on the sea, off rocks you best bet for bait would be some meaty morsel from a molusc like a limpet, muscle or clam or somesuch. More likely to attract the fish I'd havve thought.

Fish primarily aren't vegetarians some are, but most eat flesh.

Pop into you local fish market and buy some raw prawns, shrimps, mussels of just a raw fish and cut bit off, match your bait size to hook size i.e bait a little bigger, try to lose the hook in the bait.

Hooks I would suggest some 14,12.or 10s, weights take handful of small assorted size nuts from your workshop, no point in buying expensive weights to lose over rocks.

You could try float fishing that's also very enjoyable, all you need is a couple of floats and a box of split shot.

Should I be using hooklengths or just tie a hook straight on to a line?

If hooklengths, what is the best way of tying them? Found they've broken easily in the past

What strength line should I be looking at for these tiddlers

To be honest I wouldn't worry too much, you'll get snagged on the rocks and lose tackle anyway. But, I'd go for a 5lb'ish line tied straight to the hook. Being of a certain age I'm happy tying half blood knots onto spade end hooks but go with whatever you comfortable with. Keep it simple.

Go into one of the local fishing tackle shops and there are lots in Ibiza town and ask for some "CEBOS" worms in Spanish which they will have.

For rock fishing over here you can go really light say 4lb line you need something with a little muscle so I would go to say 8lbs breaking strain. If you want to have a bash at float then 4-5lb would be fine.

I only ever use loose hooks, tied directly to main line, learn to tie a hook to line and you can make your own hook lengths. If you use hook lengths then get a Breaking strain that is a lb of so less than your "main line" (one that goes to your reel)

Palomar and dropper knots are useful for "end rigs" (bit that's under the water)

I use this a a reference occasionally

Imaging that the silver hook shown in the Palomar clip is your loose eyed hook.

Hope that makes sense?

A hand grenade works really well. Just chuck it in.

Fish dinners for weeks, HTH.

Sorry.

What is an end rig?

Can that Palomar knot be used to just purely tie your line to the hook without the need for an "end rig" whatever it may be?!?

As I said, the gubbins under the water is called an "end rig", e.g. For general rock fishing a weight on the bottom of the line and hook up the line (to clear the snags)

Also have a look here you may pick up some tips and advise
