I have an old turbo lying round and have decided I want to clean it up and make a funky ornament out of it but without it costing much... Right what I need to know is what's the best way to clean it up?

Rub it down with sandpaper and then stick a buffing wheel into the end of a drill?

Try Jeyes fluid, (drain cleaner) it works on some alloys.
If it doesn't work it won't have broke the bank.
Finish with autosol and one of those green pan scouring pads or a skotchbrite 3m pad if your posh.

If you're anywhere near Warrington, I have some of the cleaning powder that engine and gearbox reconditioners use in their cleaning machines. You're welcome to have some and it will bring that up a treat smile
