We're buying a car from family but have to take it now (they want the space) before disposing of the old car.

We currently have a few option regarding insurance

1) Take out a temp policy for 28 days

2) try to add a 2nd car to the old insurance (trying to find out if we can at the mo)

3) take the old vehicle off the road and move the insurance over. This is the OH's preferred option but he thinks he needs to SORN the vehicle first as all vehicles now apparently need to be insured.

That, basically.

You swap the insurance to the new car when you pick it up, and then "add the old one onto the policy temporarily". Normally in 2 week blocks whilst you sell it.

Never heard of an insurer not doing it. They'd have to be a st company not to, it's pretty standard.

/thread.

PS - you'll have to pay a bit to have them both on the policy.

Try calling the insurance company. They can be surprisingly helpful. Mine allowed me free use of a garage courtesy car that I had to provide insurance for. I didn't even have to tell them.

Maybe. Last time mine did it for free for 28 days.

Thanks - we called the insurers and keeping two cars on the policy was going to work out a bit expensive so we're SORNing the old car and switching everying over. It's for the scrappies anyway.
