Are cranks interchangeable ?

My son has a Trek Mountainbike which he uses off road but also for riding around town/meeting up with his mates etc. The Trek doesnt have a chainguard and when he's using it around town he keeps ripping his trousers (yes I have tried to get him to use cycle clips but he's a teenager), so I was thinking of putting a different crank set on , something like this:-

Are crank sets interchangeable ? Can I just unbolt the existing one and bolt this one on or is there more to it ? I will go for a set that has the same number of teeth as the existing one so performance should be the same.

It depends what crankset he currently has on his Trek as that says square drive which means the bike will either need to already have a square drive BB or you will also have to change that.

Can't he just tuck his jeans into his socks on the inside of his right leg?
Surely he doesn't want to have ripped oily jeans?

He does tuck them in - when he remembers. He's 14, things like tucking your trousers in tend to get forgotten until the trousers rip....

This happened to me so often when I was a teenager (at the height of the baggy jeans fad) that my father scoured the country high and low for a guard for my outer chainring.

In the end the only thing that stopped it chewing up my Spliffy (oh yes) jeans was an Animal watch strap wrapped around the right leg. Far cooler than cycle clips and saved oily scuffs as well.

I've still got an MBUK velcro watch strap for that purpose somewhere.
