Lancaster bomber flew over my house (in Buntingford Herts) at about 1000 feet today. The sound from the 4 RR Merlin engines was absolutely bloody awesome. Have to say even better than my Chim !!!

We get the RAF utilisng the valley we are in. A fighter plane or two fly through every week. Every couple of months we get a huge bomber plane. As we are high up the hill they are flying just a 'few feet' over our house. Can scare the cr*p out of me if I'm out for a walk. The bomber noise isnt apparent until its literally on top of me. The horse riders arent huge fans.

Some years ago I was staying at a farmhouse b+b in Northamptonshire, a remarkable place which felt like it had been frozen in time circa 1940. I was walking through the fields thinking 'all this needs is a WW2 bomber to complete the atmosphere' and to my amazement a Lanc and a Hurricane flew past, right at that moment. There is an RAF base nearby but it remains one of the most surreal experiences of my life.

The Lancaster and one of the BBMF Hurricanes were due to do a fly past at Shuttleworth this afternoon IIRC. I thought about going up there to have a look, but the weather put paid to my plans... frown

Can't beat the Lanc though, photographed PA474 at a couple of events last summer. Shivers down the spine everytime! smokin

Was at a family day at Coltishall (BiL was a Jaguar pilot), a few years back, Lanc and Spitfire memorial flight flew over, I wasn't around during WW2, but I don't think I've ever felt more emotional in my whole life as I did at that moment... Totally humbling and unique experience.

Same here - it flew straight over my house and was very low. It sounded the absolute bks. You really cannot beat the mighty Merlin V12.... just epic.

+1. I wasn't around either but when you think of the risks those men took, taking off knowing there was a better-than-average chance they wouldn't come back it makes you shiver.

You are all so right - when you think of what those men went through in WW2 to give us what we have today - the sound of those engines sends shivers down your spine - total respect.

Saw my next TVR engine flying overhead as I passed Duxford about 5.30 on Saturday. Just imagine the TVR roar with a Merlin engine on board? Just the one - it was a Spitfire

Couldn't have put it better. The sound of these incredible machines (and the unmistakeable sound of the WW2 air raid siren) make my hairs stand on end when you consider what those noises meant to people all those years ago. Makes you proud to be British.

Those engines bellowing are always a stiring reminder to me of why I am so proud to be British, those people back then offered up their lives and we can never repay them.

Yes, I agree, the Lanc makes an awesome noise and gives me goosebumps on the rare occasion I see one fly overhead.
As mentioned already,it also reminds us of the courage of those in WW2.

As I always say on these occasions - are you sure it was a Merlin?

Sounded like it as it flew low overhead - I had the roof off the TVR as always

Being near Duxford, it is probably more than likely that it was indeed a Merlin - but don't forget that some of the Spitfires you see flying today are Griffon powered.

I actually prefer Griffon Spits to Merlin Spits - they have a much more aggressive and grumbly sound. They also look a lot more muscular -
