My girlfriend and I will be looking to go away together next year, but seem to be struggling to even narrow down some destinations! Reluctant to ask in a TA, as I can only imagine they will push something on us we don't really want, so I thought I'd ask PH. smile

Best give some info I guess! We are quite fussy, I am sorry!

- Somewhere warm, I am in desperate need of a tan.
- Somewhere quiet, we are 21/22, but we hate clubbing, partying etc, and screaming kids.
- Need somewhere relaxing, we aren't adverse to doing stuff like diving etc, but we're not looking for an activity holiday really.
- Somewhere unusual maybe?
- Somewhere with minimal snakes, I am fking petrified of them!
- We are probably only going for 7 nights, so don't want to be having a really long flight each way.
- Not Africa (too dangerous, apparently)
- No crazy prices, I was happy with £1k pp, but she's looking at more like £500/600/700 as she's doing her Masters.

Anyone who says Bournemouth can ps off! wink

Cheers ears. smile

I go to The Gambia when I want to get a solid week's sunshine. It's hot and sunny. Six hours flight directly south, so no jet lag. Relatively cheap. The hotels are averaage, but do the job if you just want to laze by the pool. There's nothing much to do. So, you don't feel as if you should be out and about exploring. Best months are May & October/November.

I use these people.

As above. Went in September during rainy season and pretty much alone at the Kairaba. It rained for an hour every day with permanent sunshine before and after. Very cheap, just book the room and eat out. Beer well under 1 quid in the local bar (4- 5 times that at the hotel), great dinner for 2 incl bottle of wine for about 20. Absolutely alone at the beach due to low season (very recommended; also cheaper!) - couldn't be any quieter.

The monkeys come to the hotel to feed every day. Great time.

The only thing I'd add to F.Penguin esq's excellent post is that the sea @ The Kiaraba is treacherous. It's much safer at the Sheraton which is also an 'All inclusive' resort.

Top suggestion there boys, thank you. Unfortunately as you recommended that I was looking at the Cape Verde islands too, which looked nice. Asked her what she thought, and she was quite happy until she found out they were in Africa.

Apparently we aren't going there as 'I don't want us to get kidnapped and murdered, I don't want to be on the news'.

Bummer, I liked the look of The Gambia as well. frown

I'd go somewhere east of Tavira on the Algarve.

One or two quiet resorts out that way, and if you pick the right place, the food / drink prices are comparable to the UK a couple of decades ago.

You know it's going to be a cheap and fun holiday when you see ancient locals in 'piss pot' helmets on their pre-revolution motorbikes, carrying a couple of buckets of shellfish on the handlebars.

The Gambia is so very safe. Nothing has happened there EVER.

As for Cape Verde. I've been to Sal and it's a godforsaken, windblown rock. Mrs Blib says it has nothing to commend it. We certainly would not return the Cape Verde.

Madeira's rather nice.

Not in Africa, but shares some of their climate. Portugese, so civilised, but not beer and chips (although you can get these).

Cuba's very nice at the moment too, but Madeira's closer smile

Essaouira, Morocco.

It's a bit 'third world' in places, but certainly cheap and full of atmosphere. Dune buggy safaris / camel rides / surfing are all available, alternatively you can just veg on the beach and chill.

What about the Portugese west coast from Lisbon down? Fly to Lisbon, hire a car & just head down the coast. We've done this years ago & just stopped where we thought looked nice. Stayed in all sorts of places from fancy 5* hotels to little b&b's. Most were quite happy to do a deal as it was out of season. We were out there for about 3 weeks & had a fantastic time. A lot of places spoke no English, so ordering food could be a bit of an adventure, but one of those little phrase books & you'll be sound. Some lovely quiet little places, nice weather & fantastic beaches.

Technically Cape Verde is part of Africa, but that's like saying the Falklands are in Argentina wink

Cape Verde is known as Africa's most stable country, so she's being a bit stupid tbh.

As for Gambia, now that is in Africa, but your biggest threat is the gf running off with a beach boy - it I'd suggest that's unlikely...

Grenada if you can do it in budget.

I had two weeks in a great hotel for £620 (flights and hotel no food) a couple of years ago.

How about croatia, I went there 2 years ago and it was lovely. We were based in Milna on the island of Brac (just outside Split) and it was a nice and relaxing, very laid back and bay in which the water was totally transparent. (With a group of friends we did this for £300pp for 2 weeks although its gone up more now)

Other parts of the Island - Bol are very nice or even Hvar (another island but very nice still)

Alternativly I've just got back from Kos in greece and it was lovely, if bar streeet isn't your thing there are a wide variety of other hotels to choose from some of which are adult only.

We stayed in a 5* all inclusive resort for £429 each a few weeks ago and are going back in September for £5 less, although this was only for a week. If you want a nice quiet adult orientated hotel maybe look at the Kipriatis Panomara hotel (we stayed in the Maris which is close but caters for familes also) and should be able to do it for less than £600 per person in the summer (outside of school holidays). Just my 2p though.

obviously i don't know you or your OH, but a reaction like this usually means someone will only go where they want to go.

how about somewhere out of season - the alps look stunning in summer as do the nordic countries. island hopping in and around stockholm is on my to do list.

Kudos

The Maris looks nice. Who did you book with?

We are trying to find somewhere to go in a couple of weeks, similar criteria to the OP's.
