I have a dilemma.

I bought a car 2 months ago and my OH hates it, so it is up for sale (It's a BMW 118d by the way). It has now been suggested, by the OH as it goes, that maybe we could get 2 cars. This was music to my ears really.

The thing is we did used to have 2 cars but mine hardly got used as I have a van for work which I come home in. This is the dilemma. Do we go back to having to tax, insure, maintain etc 2 cars again or still have one? There will be more and more occasions in the near future where it would be handy to have a car each again.

If we were to get 2 the budget would be £7k for hers and £2k for mine. She will either have a Beetle or another MINI ( we have had MINI's for the last 5 years) and I will not have a say in what she gets and visa versa.

The subject of the What Car Thread part is what the hell do I buy. My list goes from an MX5 to a Jaguar XJR via an Alfa GTV, RX8 or a Golf GTi, plus a few others(80s Mercedes? MG TF or even ZT). My head is buzzing and I feel all giddy at the prospect of what will happen.

This all depends on if our BMW is sold at the right price. If this can't be achieved then we will have to keep it for a while, maybe 2 years and go from there.

So, £2k budget, less than 100k miles, doesn't matter about MPG or insurance to an extent, no BMWs(sorry), newer than 1980, would prefer at least 2+2 seats although not essential at the moment(as MX5 suggests above).

Favorite at the moment is the last Celica.

Over to you.

What do you want? Something you can take out for a blast and really clear out the cobwebs, string a few corners together, stir the box and really feel like you are wringing its neck? If that is the case then the MX-5 is the only choice IMHO.

If you want something "different", or with a sense of occasion, nice noise, etc., then you are going to compromise on the driving dynamics.

How about a classic?

PS - inserting my standard recommendation for a pre-GM Saab 900 turbo smile

The thing about the MX5 is I had one in 2004 brand new. I loved it! Whilst I did mention it in my OP I'm not sure I want to go back there.

I think I might want something "different". I quite fancy a "waft" but the potential big bills scare me. I'd love an RX8 but my budget would buy a bag of nails I fear. The road tax puts me off too.

Could I get an 80s Mercedes pillarless coupe in budget and it be reliable?

Don't know Mercs at all but there are a few SECs in the classifieds in budget. 6 series? Not sure what they are like at 2k though... How about something like a Mitsubishi Starion? Porsche 924?

Clio Williams? Although getting one with less than 100k for £2k might be pushing it. Service record is infinitely more important than a number on a clock.

For 2k get an rx8 and if it the engine pops get a recon lump. You have the van as a backup vehicle anyhow.

The 1 series diesels are just awfull, gutless and fugly.

The 1 series hasn't done anything wrong really. It's just and bit too German and boring TBH. Plus the OH hates it and that means I get grief from her.

I did cast my eye over a couple of Porches but got scared by big bills.

Interesting suggestion. Might have to look at these...
