Ive owned my smg for a year now. I love my bms and have always wanted the e46 M, but Recently I've been getting put off.
The car refuses to start.
I've had the smg checked at west3 my local specialist, and it's all good, which makes sense as when it did start it drove and changed gear fine.
The yellow smg light and engine management light have been on and gear display shows 0, but doesn't start.
Last year I had problems with it dropping out of gear so changed the old salmon relay and it was back to normal but that's not helped this time, or the new bosch battery.

It used to start before if it was left for an hour or two, than it got worse and became hours, and now it just won't start at all, after days of been parked up.
Reading other forums It looks Like the starter motor could be one option, which was next on the diagnostic at the specialist, but at £70 an hour +VAT I couldn't leave it there longer for the motor to be checked.

Does anyone have any ideas?

All replies appreciated.

Sounds like your car has broken down, even if it's on your drive.
I'd call the breakdown people.

Yeah I figured that mate. I meant does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be?
Or has anyone experienced similar symptoms?

Lots of good advice on m3cutters.com.

Could be the bonnet sensor catch, if either of them have failed the car thinks the bonnet is open and won't allow it to start.

Yes other forums have sugested to change the starter motor and I changed that yesterday at my local, but still no start.
I will try the bonnet sensor.

Cheers.

I think it would still start if it was a bonnet sensor, you just wouldn't be able to select gears. I'm sure I've had mine running with the bonnet up. Unless there's some other issue with the switch that could create this problem.

Hope you get it sorted, have you had a brief test to read all the fault memories? I'd recommend this and an alternator test. This should pinpoint the cause of the problem.
