i'm considering the above...

obviously I realise straight line performance is big factor, but aside from that, how did the change feel?

in terms of handling, living with, sound, fun etc etc....

thanks

Agree to disagree wink

The 997 turbo has a 'sound' but the sound may not appeal to all.

I have a tubi exhaust on my C2S and the sound is incredible, I went for a test drive in a 997 turbo and the sound was... not so incredible but it has a unique sound of it's own. After driving it for a while you can hear the turbo whistle and the anticipation of the power delivery brings a smile to your face even before the power comes in.

If you like whooshing noises (with a little bit of flat six in the background) you should be ok. hehe

I would highly recommend you take a test drive in one and see what you think.

Well - the turbo does not sound like a Ferrari.

But if you get the rpm's up and the turbos spool it sounds alright. And that's on my 997 - sure the same goes for the 996.

yes haha it does have a sound

in full sport mode on the motor way with a dab of power is sounded like a lorry ...u know the big turbo noise hehe ...put it this way i was bounceing of the limiter a few times as i had eyes on the road and couldnt judge rev limit cos of lack of noise .

yeah it does make me think maybe a c2s with a sports exhaust would be better.... i have a remus on my cayman and its amazing, but i've got way to used to the lack of straight line speed (2.7ltr)

c2s is fine straight line speed

turbo better of course but unless you are pushing for the 180mph you wont notice much diff

plus power delivery is so much nicer in c2s spech when you get to limit and u get that loverly whaleing noise hehe

Were you only running on one Turbo when you owned yours?

Sound - problem solved!

Edit - The link above is for a 997 exhaust system, not a 996.

This is exactly what I did. Did that new Porsche before your 40 thing, did it, had it two years, loved the cayman, but it was never going to have 911 kudos. After missing it, 996 turbos were hitting 40k, so I took the plunge with a modified version with track geo and techart bits and bobs. Four years ago and a keeper. That says it all really.

I went from an 02 Boxster to an 08 Cayman S to an 03 Turbo. I still have the 02 Boxster, now with nearly 258K miles on it.

The Cayman S I lost to an accident -- not my fault -- about 4 weeks after I bought it.

After the dust settled, and the other driver paid up, I bought a new 03 Turbo with 10K miles in pristine condition.

I like (liked) all 3 cars. They are each alike in many ways but different in many ways too.

All 3 cars handle very well. There are of course differences due to obvious reasons, but they are exceptional handling cars, make that exceptional in all areas. I mean even the "lowly" Boxster is a heck of a car.

I do not like a noisy car so the Turbo's I guess to some muffled exhaust is a plus to me. Drive nearly 1K miles per day -- as I have been known to do on a long road trip -- and see how you like a car with a noisy exhaust.

The Turbo can be scary fast and it is impossible at least in the USA to use it any where near its full potential mainly its ability to eat up big miles at speed. While have covered some big miles in a day in the Turbo (and the Boxster and even other others I have owned in the past) I do so running at no more than (in some places) 80mph. In other areas the speed limit is 75mph or even lower even on the open highway.

Oh to be able to legally drive at say 100mph or even faster...sigh.

Too many things to cover. All I can suggest is you drive examples of both cars and make up your own mind.

Sincerely,

Rockster.

Hi just changed from a 10 plate Boxster 2.9 pdk, loved it the sound was finn, put it in 2 weeks ago and picked up 911 carrera 4 gts. Sound is lovely, very sure footed. The boxster was fun to drive , absolutely loved it. The GTS is a different cup of tea, still great fun just love driving it. Had a few teething problems which are sorted now. The dealer loaned me a GTS cabriolet, I never realised how loud it was till I had the roof down. I was a bit apprehensive at first as never had a test drive, I bought it with my heart, Guards red, though the myth was rapidly shattered, when I realised just how easy it is to drive.
