Just realised there's iPhone apps which can track your rides and record where you've been and overlay it on a map etc. Maybe even save your route and give you stats etc. I've no idea really what other cool stuff they do. There seems to be a million and one websites to help maps your riding, and the same number of apps!

So before I just download something at random, do you guys have some recommendations? Preferably ones you've seen a good review for, or even better ones you use yourself.

Cheers

Strava is a good one, but be ready for your battery life to go to rats

Endomondo is probably the best at tracking, but Strava lets you see your time against lots of other people on specific 'known' sections of routes.

Get Strava.

Strava! But turn your screen off if using on an iPhone or you'll get half an hour of battery life.

Strava but watch the privacy settings unless you want your routes to tell the world where you live, where you work and what you ride.

Installed. Looks good so far. Not so keen about the privacy settings, since I can't turn it "off" completely, all I can do is to restrict it so only members can see me. Would prefer privacy really, but it's only bike rides I suppose (left the rest of the profile blank.) Will test it out tonight.

Cheers again.

The point is really that you're sharing your rides with other cyclists. If you're worried about people finding out where you live just start your log from halfway down the road wink

I use this and am really pleased with it. Prefer the layout of data over Strava too.

I've only tried Endomondo and Mapmyride. They seemed to have some substantial discrepancies so I ran them both simultaneously and the Endomondo track simply looked like it sampled far less often than Mapmyride, even missing off the best part of 1/4 mile where I'd turned >90 degrees at a junction. I deleted Endomondo after that.

Haven't tried Cyclemeter or Strava so I'll install them (if they're free) and compare, but my recommendation would be Mapmyride over Endomondo at least.

Rather than do that, if you go to "privacy" in your settings you can create a "blank zone", 1km in diameter around any postcode eg. Your home. Saves having to mess about once you've started riding.

On the battery life issue, I guess it depends on which device you use, what other functions/apps you have running and what condition your battery is in. I did a 3 hr ride last weekend and the phone was still on 75% when I got home (charged to 100% overnight) which I thought was pretty good.

Just been out for an hours' ride.... of which strava managed to record 10mins rolleyes

WTF? It was on an iPhone 3G in my pocket. No tunnels etc so no reason for a bad signal. (Was on open roads/cycle paths, no tall buildings etc). Why such a bad performance?

Should I try it again tomorrow, or should I install another app?
Cheers

ETA - most of my riding was in and out of my "privacy zone" near home. Would that be the reason it went crazy?

I've never had great results (HTC Desire + endomondo) in my pocket. I get best results with the phone in the top pocket on my rucksack. I think it keeps a clear GPS fix when it's like that.

Does the GPS on your 3G generally work OK with other apps? Mine was so so bad that Sat Nav apps never worked and the regular "maps" app could never find my position. It was the main reason I swapped for an iPhone 4.

I'm not sure if Strava ignores everything you do in the blank zone or just doesn't publish it when it uploads. I've never had data missing with Strava and keep the phone either in a jacket pocket, jersey rear pocket or in a saddle bag.

I think it just doesn't show the route within your privacy zone. I have just switched from endomondo to strava and a ride I do frequently came out at the same distance.

Really impressed with the info on strava, until I saw I was 29th out of 30 on a climb segment! Mind you, I will definitely work harder up the hill next time!

Ive just gone throught the last 9 rides on my history. I ride exactly the same way to and from work and Endo has me at 8.69, 5.56, 8.58, 6.28, 0.00, 8.46, 7.68, 0.00, 7.5. When I planned the route by car it was 8.5 miles. Might try Mapmyride again, that was my first app but everyone ranted about Endo so I swapped. I tried Strava but its not for me smile

Snap - I've used cyclemeter for 18 months now (tried edmonodo / strava / mapmyride all at the beginning) but really liked a few features of cyclmeter. And as they improve it, it gets better.
