It's a renault so check EVERYTHING and then walk away from it towards something decent.

Well how much have you been offered it for?

IMO, it would need to be a 3-digit number (and a mid-range one at that).

Had a 57 plate diesel as a company car. There now banned from our choices as it was so unreliable. Mostly electrical problems and a very leaky boot. If its very low miles check inside the oil filler for mayo. If It's had a life of short stop start journeys leave it. I guess It's down to price, condition history etc, also.

How much? If you can find an equivalent ford mondeo or vectra for that price then NO!

I've owned two renaults, albeit clios (an R reg 1.2 and a clio 197) and the electric are absolutely shocking! (literally?)

Never buy a mk2 laguna I had major electrical problems with mine, and most people in the trade won't even take them in px
I think I spent in the region of about 3 grand on repairs in a year.
I ended up swapping it for a £300 fiesta when it was 4/5 years old and had Less than 70,000 on the clock, and mine was not a one off as about 90% of post 2001 lagunas are the same.
I would list all the faults but it would take up most of the night.
Treat yourself to a mondeo or passat instead.

My brother used to be a service manager at a Renault Dealership, and everyday he had a tail of woe about Mk2 Laguna's......

Even low mileage, high spec well serviced cars would only be offered a few hundred quid for if taken in PX, as not even the traders would want to buy them off the dealership.

I am not against Renaults at all, one of my cars is a Renault Sport Clio.... But anyone that reports a trouble free ownership experience on a Laguna will one day likely win the lottery, as they are very, very lucky individuals.

I had a new 2001 Laguna 1.8 Petrol. Left the job in the end so that I could get rid of the (company) car.

T'was a nightmare. I believe that when they got the round rear lights they became much better.

I'm in your boat. The car was pretty good as a cruiser and they look very good value for money. They can't all be that bad. My nagging doubt is maybe that are!

1.8 I always thought was a tad underpowered, and a tad thirsty.

I had a 52 plate initiale model but the 2 litre IDE petrol engine and in the 5 years I had it I only had to replace a key card.

Still a crap and tacky place to be. Horrid car and every time I drove it I just wanted it to explode.

I have one the same age as yours, had it for 2 1/2 years, it's not been problem free but then it is nearly 10 years old.

Drives ok, comfy on a long journey, spares can be expensive. contrary to what almost everyone here has posted, mine has not suffered a complete electrical meltdown, just a couple of minor issues. Ours has been all over the UK and Ireland without real problems.

things to look for, electrical issues, suspension knocks, electric window issues(more likely to be a mechanical fault rather than electrical) oil leaks. they do use a bit of oil so keep an eye on that.

As has been said these are cheap, for the model your looking at, they go through the auctions for less than £500.

Would i have another, probably, it would have to be cheap, if i couldnt find a cheap one i'd be looking at a Mondeo or Vectra.

Always been tempted by them - but too many horror stories- BUT i am surprised at the number you see in taxi- what's going on there ?- have all the issues been fixe- or is Laguna a repeat fault offender?
I think Citroen C5 is another avoid? with Pug 406 best of the mid range french cars?

Really have always had the same question as above. If so bad, why are their thousands of them, and their Citroen/Pug brothers and sisters on the road. Where do they feature on the reliability surveys.

I had a 2007 MK2.5 for a bit - they'd fixed a LOT from the MK2 but it still had rear suspension bushes at 16000 miles......

Sons SEAT IBIZA, eats suspension bushes, next door neighbours BMW 318, is on its 3rd set of rear springs, in 60k of mileage.

Again, as usual, are we just hearing the one bad experince, out of hundreds of satisfied Renault drivers.
