Engine rebuild at TVR Power

The Chim is booked in for an engine rebuild at TVR Power at the end of the month. I don't think there is anything seriously wrong with it, but it has done 52,000 miles, uses quite a lot of oil, and there are some odd noises. I'm not having any upgrades carried out as this will affect the insurance costs. While the engine is out, the clutch is also being replaced as it slips slightly in the upper gears.

Has anybody here had a V8 rebuild done. If so, what differences did you notice when you got the car back?

Re - insurance.

I bought a standard 4l very recently. It has had some mods:

High lift cams and lifting gear etc.

Sports exhaust.

Tuned induction plenem and trumpets.

Mark Adams Tornado chip.



Declared all this to the insurance company and no change in premium!

how much and what are they doing exactly?
ie what bits are they replacing and are you just dropping the car or taking the engine in?

I'm leaving the car with them for a couple of weeks because they are also re-coring the radiator and refurbishing the chasis.

They will remove the engine, strip it down, replace the cam with a standard version, replace the rings, barings etc, skim the heads and block, deglaze the block, reseat the valves and check all the other engine componants. They will also install a new clutch and a new eprom chip. As for cost, if you refer to the TVR Power web site and look at the 4.0L "drive in drive out" upgrade page and deduct the cost of porting the heads etc then thats about it.

My rebuild was done before I got the car, I cant comment but I belive the higher compression ratio can add a very small amount of extra power... so I was told, I dont know.

I can also vouch that my insurance co (sunninghill) said the Mark Adams Tornado chip (+ sports pipes) wont affect the quote at all on my S series.

I was told by Mannings that if ungrades such as sports cam, tornado chip or any power enhancing modifications were made, then this would attract a 25% loading to my policy

The car is fast enough for me as it is, I just want a smooth running and reliable motor which will be good for another 52,000 miles.
