Looking for a fairly reasonable project car..
Anyone owned either or both of these? tell me your opinions on which you prefer..
and which'll end up being the more fun option...?

With respect mate, I don't think either of those is going to light your fuse for excitement. But if I had to choose personally, and the car was going to remain close to standard engine wise, I'd be looking at the FTO.

Unless you can forsee a 2JZ-GTE swap in the future on the Supra.

MX5 tongue out

But of those two I'd take the Supra unless you really like warm hatches.

Why not the TT Supra? I have driven an NA, it is not special in any way.

An NA supra has 220bhp and weighs 200kg more than an FTO, hardly a rocket ship is it?

Ps. the FTO also isn't a hatch and is quicker than any modern "warm hatch".

Anyway, in my opinion:

Looks - Similar looks though a well specced/modded supra is still a great looking thing
Noise - FTO wins, the 2l V6 sounds great and has far more character than the N/A supra engine
Price - If you can find an unmolested (i.e. not ruined by chavvy mods) version of either you're doing well, though I'd guess the FTO would be a bit cheaper for similar year/mileage examples.

Both are a fairly rare sight on the road, supras slightly more rare. If you buy an N/A supra you'll always wish it was a TT and everyone who sees you and knows anything about cars will also wish it was a TT.

I would think an FTO GPX is probably a more fun and involving drive, though clearly not RWD. But then 220bhp+1500kg+RWD is hardly going to be thrilling.

In summary, get a decent clean FTO GPX of those two. Or, as said above, just buy an MX-5 smile

Out of interest did you drive a manual or automatic car? Makes a fair bit of difference smile

I owned a manual mivec for almost a year. It sounded epic but just didn't feel quick to me. I later had an S2k which although quicker than the ft slow also didn't set my pants on fire,

Maybe I just like torque!

Fair enough, if an S2000 wasn't quick enough then an FTO clearly wouldn't be smile

Never understand how fast people expect them to be though. It's barely 200bhp in a 15 year old, and the rest, car design. It's not exactely gonna keep pace with a TVR or a new Focus RS etc but with numerous owners cars recording 15secs or under for 1/4 mile it's still as quick as most modern hatches bar the recent 250bhp+ club.

That would put it around the same pace as a GTV 3.0 V6 (too heavy), Clio 182,
Focus ST, accord type-r etc. Which is pretty much what I'd expect, reasonably nippy but a long way off the pace of an F430 smile

There seems to be a lot of FTO Automatics for about £700-1400 right now are they quite unreliable? Having been for a shot of an FTO id say go for one of them. The one i was in was a GPX triptronic and tbh i was suprised at how good the autobox was. (Although my only other automatic experience is a Chrysler grand voyager)

you anywhere near guilford OP?

if so, i can point you in the direction of someone to speak to - they will give you every pro/con of each car and give you the realistic modding routes.

I've driven a Manual MIVEC FTO several years ago. They are pretty rare as a manual, and as nice as they are the thought of owning one didn't entertain me. In 2002 I purchased a 5-speed manual 1995 SZ Supra instead. I would have liked a TT, but at the age of 22 (at the time) my insurance company wouldn't insure me. I've had the car for 9 years now and wouldn't part with it for love nor money. If keeping it N/A, the only engine mods worth the money are the usual air filter, exhaust and de-cat. You can still have a lot of fun with 225bhp and rear wheel drive even tho they are not the lightest of cars. I decided to Turbo the existing engine about three years ago. For £1200, a few late nights and grazed knuckles the car now kicks out a very reliable 374BHP and 404NM torque @ a mere 6psi of boost. There is a lad on the Supra forum at the moment who picked up a tatty N/A Supra and with a bit of spannering and a turbo kit is now running 500BHP for a measly £3k including the purchase of the car!

the videos you posted up are good first one does sound better.

You can really hear the difference that extra litre of displacement makes in the MR2, It doesn't sound like you need to really wring its neck to make progress.
