I am looking for a car I can do a few trackdays in a year and general fun motoring otherwise so it cannot be a completely impactical Cater-Field type toy but I need help with choices:

MR2 Turbo - Had one before loved it, LSD as standard but they are now getting older and quite hard to find a decent Rev 3 GT that has not been body-kitted to hell and back.
MX5 - Again had one before, but unless it's a turbo a little underpowered.
S2000 - Had one before, great gearbox and LSD as standard
Mk1 Boxster S - Like these, but more expensive £8 - £9k for decent one it seems and concerns over IMS / RMS failure and no LSD.
Z3M - I had a Z4M before, this seems a poor second with the compact chassis.

So, I think it is a choice between the S2000 and the MR2 Turbo, but I welcome other thoughts?

Probably 5 - 6k anything more expensive means saving for longer before purchase.

E36 M3? Does it have to be rear wheel drive?

I have wondered about these especially as Dale is now running one at the 'Ring these days, I have been reading his updates with interest.

I run a 2003 boxster s on track and road, and have done about 8 trackdays now,
only had to change brakepads so far. It is a brilliant car and very underestimated. Saying that servicing does not come cheap, and a low mileage example like mine is beyond your budget.

Have you thought about a clio 172 cup, you can pick them up for about 2 - 3k,
strip them out, stick some sticky rubber on, and they great to throw around the circuit, and a lot faster then cars costing 3 times the price.
And if you crash, there are lots of cheap spares, or just buy another.
As long as you can get over the boy racer image.

They are Fun , Fun , FUN.

Would not like to be seen on the road in one though. hehe

£5-6k will get you a very nice turbo'd MX5 (260bhp+) which would then be one of the quicket track cars on your list.

I've ran a Lancer for seven seasons with no issues, you'd get a good early car for that.

Possibly an E36 M3 or a 328i, then strip out the interior?

How do find the lack of LSD on track? As I am tempted by one of these

I'd have said have a look at my supercharged Mx5, but took a deposit this evening-

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4089900.htm

Other than that I'm rather an fan of e36 M3s are just epic track cars for the dosh, need a few bits to make decent but even with mild tweeks they just work so well, in decnet track prep form they have same weight as an s2000, less than a Boxster S & similar to an RX8, but have considerably more grunt, 300bhp vs 240/250/230

Easy sub 8min (btg) 'ring day in day out & 7.40 for decent hands.

£5-6k will get you in VX220 - just - but at least the Elise/VX220 are designed for track work as well as the road.

I have owned a Rev 3 GT Turbo before and I really liked the car, but it seems very hard to find a clean one these days frown

What about a Z4 3.0 Sport?

e36 M3 is by far the best choice in my opinion.

spend 3.5k on a 3.0 and another 2k on Tasty suspension and brakes.... you'll be faster than most other things on the track smile
