Five people were caught travelling at more than twice the maximum speed limit last year.

The worst offender was stopped while hurtling along the A27 at Binstead, West Sussex at 152mph on his Yamaha motor bike.
Two others were stopped on the A90 running from Dundee to Aberdeen by Tayside Police driving at 149mph and 141mph.

The presence of average speed cameras on the road appears to have had little impact on the most determined speed-merchants on the A90, with another driver being stopped after being clocked travelling at 139mph.

Elsewhere on the A27, another road user was caught near Chichester, West Sussex travelling at 134mph.
According to figures compiled by LV, following freedom of information requests to police forces across the country, straight stretches of A roads are more likely to be used as race tracks than motorways.

That's nothing! If your bike doesn't hit the limiter, you're not trying.

The key word here is caught I'd expect if your travelling at 140+ it wouldn't be too hard to get away.

I remember a while back watching a cop TV show, the officer sat on a sliproad with his speed gun and caught a Lupo GTI doing 124mph. He gave chase and found the car behind a lorry doing 60. The kid has give his car a blast (straight through the speed gun) then slowed and carried on his journey. Something tells me if he continued at 124 then came off at the next junction he wouldn't have been found.

So the anti-speeding campaign IS working.

That 2011 record is 13% down on the year 2000's worst offender.

Statistics, eh? What do they really tell us?

9 out of 10 people disagree with them.

I agree with the anti-speed stuff. I thought many a car / bike has been caught doing over 140.

That telegraph article, and especially the map with its rankings comes accross almost like a competition and a description of the sites to try it.

I am sure that isn't what was meant by it. biglaugh

Interesting (for me) to see the A435 on there, as a kid i used to always be excited when my Dad drove us on that road as he'd nearly always use it as an excuse 'to see what this thing can do' he obviously needed to keep checking each time we went on the road to make sure the car was still ok

Though it us frustrating when the speedo is just stuck at 186 and refuses to go any higher.

Driving standards are pretty terrible on the south coast- a hairy mix of blind old grannies, boy racers and suicidal middle aged nutters on 200bhp motorbikes rotate

Thats old.

Guy on a documentary programme called 'The Real Story' claimed to have done 200mph on "'t Bypass". I don't think that the man, ("Sammy") really existed.

i am amazed that more people don't get caught or are highlighted............i've seen people regularly in excess of 120, often in excess of 130 and even, yep, on occasion 150

its perfectly safe in the right car, and the right place.
