As mentioned in other threads ... depending upon the problem, remember that the pod motors are really just ordinary windscreen wiper motors with a few bits added.

So if you're in that space, any of the BL range, and Hillman Hunters (if you can find any) are good parts sources...

thanks Zig - they do have them in stock but will wait to see if anything else comes along as they are quite expensive.

RCK - just need an easy swap if possible. My motor works fine but doesnt park in the correct place for some strange reason. Its been like this for a while now and I picked Wedg1e's brain a few years ago about this.

Anybody else have a good motor please?

Hi Mate..Glad to help..You say it doesnt "Park" in the correct place...Are you saying that the pod doesnt sit flush/doesnt travel all the way down?..If this is the case it may be that the actuating arm needs re-aligning..When pods are up take off the live terminal to battery..pop out the lenses and bowl and see if the actuating arms that are connected from the motor to the pod are in equal positions..Use the good one as a guide..You never know it could be worth a look...Ziga

Hmm, not parking in right place...

Does it stop correctly at the 'top' when headlamp is on ?

There's several things it could be - as Zig says, the arm could be set up wrongly.
There is a small 'key' cut in the arm for alignment, but it's small enough to wear, or for the arm to be tightened up when key is not aligned right.

If motor stops at both UP and DOWN positions then it's probably OK.... I guess it could be the mechanism inside (which effectively stops the relay) , but I can't really see that working "but at the wrong position".

On my wedge, the arm doesn't point straight up vertical at the UP position, but it does point directly at the headlamp pod bolt, i.e "minimum possible arm length for full pod lift"

Also the motors can be adjusted a little in the brackets....

[saying this as I don't want you to fit a new motor but have exactly the same problem !! ]

The headlight pod sits flush with the bodywork when down but when lifted it doesnt raise to full lift. The bottom of the headlamp does not quite clear the bodywork.
The adjustable arms look as if they are exactly the same length. Both motors always work fine.
Its a strange challenge and doesnt seem to be anything thats obvious. I would be gutted if I changed the motor and it was the same but cannot think of what to do next.

Try lubrication of working parts/swivel joints etc, don't suppose the parking stops have moved or fouling things or are they?

Sorry, but from that description, I can't see how the h/l motor can be dodgy.... it's working fine, just not quite enough pod movement...

Ideas -

check The motor arms are the same length between the motor shaft and the pivot to adjustable arm (someone could have bodged/redrilled it ?).

If it's a replacement pod or repair on that side, someone could have put the bolt in the wrong place on the pod moulding - so, check distance from the pod mounting bolt (to body) and the bolt to the operating arm against the other side. This is critical to get full movement of pod .... move nearer body mounting bolt to get more lift of pod.

Hmmm, Actually - that's probably the fix anyway, redrill a hole a (small !) bit nearer the body mounting, and reassemble the operating arm to new hole, and reset the arm length as reqd.

(does that make sense ? - have a think about the geometry of the pod and arms etc ..)

Hi

In simple terms is the problem, when the head lights are raised one is higher than the other?

If thats the case then it could be as simple as the rubber stop is not aligned the same on each light!

It's onlt a bit of hose pipe attached to the bottom edge of the pod!

Thank for the advise guys, more ideas to think about.
Its definately not a bodge or a redrill job though RCK as I know my car well and its all pukka!
Also definately not a lubrication job as all moves fine.
I really need to be underneath and watch while somebody turns the lights on and off to see if the movement on each motor and lever etc to pod is the same.

Why don't you rig up a remote switch to the headlamp relay so you can operate it on the end of a long wire. Then you can turn the lights on and off with the switch while underneath the car.

It's possible, though I haven't fully thought this out (hehe) that the nylon 'ramp' inside the motor gearbox has been inadvertently plugged in to the wrong hole (there are two)... that would tend to mess up the parking. Of course it'd probably also mess up the retracted position as well so probably not, but just in case, I thought I'd mention it wink

I didn't know that could be done.... !! I've not had a motor apart down to every last piece.

Ferlin - No worries, just that a lot of wedges have been 'around the block' a few times if you know what I mean...... I reckon it's a good idea to try to work out what's happening - the motor *should* stop 180 degrees apart to top and bottom, perhaps wedg1e's suggestion might be the cure...
under the nose with a torch ??? Been there....

I did find on my wedge that the 'stops' (-> bent rusty bracket with a bit of heater hose) weren't doing anything, and the pods did originally park differently and one rattled when up, so H/L light wobbled quite a bit. Took a while to reset them , restore the stops properly, grease and so on.

I think that's what I said on Sunday, it sounds like the stops need replacing at the worst or just a simple realignment!

OK, no worries.

Hopefully it IS just the stops, BUT, according to ferlin's description, it sound like there isn't enough actual movement of the pod, which was why I suggested what I did.... After all, looking at the design it wouldn't surprise me at all to get the odd one with the hole in the wrong place !!

Another, waaay outside possibility is that the crank arm is longer (or shorter biggrin) on one side than the other. Not sure why it was done but I have seen one motor with a shorter arm than standard... that would have the effect of not lifting the pod as far.

hi Ferlin

with power it maybe difficult to see what the problem is, best to crank by hand with the manual knob at the bottom of the motor, through the hole in the body.

sounds like any of the above and possibly trapped wires, over tightening fixing bolt (unlikely but you never know)

but does not seem like a replacement.

best of luck
