I was informed after my MOT that the steering as some play in it, whilst i done my front end rebuild i changed rack rods and the ends, and both UJ's, which brings it to the rack itself.

I have adjusted the pinion gear tension that has eliminated the play but has tightened up the rack and stopped the self centring, which i knew might happen, but was worth a try.

Currently my rack is leak free, and think that a rebuild isn't necessary, and wonder could just the pinion be changed in situ. From the racing green website it seems the pinion is available, and that the rack shouldn't wear, but is also available.

I'm going to back the tension off tomorrow and see if I can get a happy medium between a bit of play and being able to steer whilst I use the car for now, and consider a rebuild of the rack during the winter, although if the pinion can just be changed, would do the pinion seals at the same time.

Remove pinion and rotate 180deg, this will remove the straight ahead play if your rack is anything like mine. You will need to make new flats on the steering shaft so everything lines up.

I do have a spare rack that is in need of a rebuild as it leaks. However the mechanism is fine and has no wear.
I am up for offers if interested.
