For a year or so now, I've had a MoTeC M4 Pro ECU sitting in my shed waiting to be fitted to my GT-Four.

It was supposed to be fitted this August, but a sudden change in my circumstances means that I can't really justify the expenditure, and indeed am probably going to have to sell it.

Problem is, because I've never fitted it, I don't know if it works. I bought it second-hand from someone who assured me it did work, and as he was a friend of mine I've no reason to disbelieve him, but it would be good to be able to confirm once and for all.

Now, this leads to another problem. I'm a complete idiot when it comes to this sort of thing. I've no idea what I'm doing. Obviously I can't fit it to the car, but I've been told I can give it power and plug it in to my PC via the RS232 cable I have and get the MoTeC software to communicate with it, tell me if it has a base map on it etc.

However, I can't see an RS232 port on the ECU to plug the cable in to, and even if I could, I wouldn't have a clue how to give it power. Is it a case of finding the 12V pin on the pin-out and shoving that on the positive terminal of a car battery? What would I connect the negative terminal up to? Would I need to connect any other pins up, like GND or anything?

Haylp!

Go to here:

ask the same question:

In short terms, you need to power up the ECU using the main connector, and a loom that at the very least supplies Vbat and Gnd. Ideally, you should connect an injector and some coil(s) (via an ignition amp iirc on the M4) and there is a test mode in the s/w that allows you to exercise the outputs to check they work.

To "talk" to the ecu you will need the motec coms cable, as they put the RS232 level converter in the plug, rather than in the ecu, so you have to buy the propper cable from them (for vast expense being Motec.....) (actually, it's a fairly easy hack to do yourself).

So, ask on that forum for a pinout diagram, and the correct s/w level (you also might need to find an old skool laptop with a real serial port (rather than a virtual one (via usb)) (you might get away with just setting your usb-serial adaptor to Com1)

The RS232 is iirc in the main connector (3 wires Tx, Rx, gnd)

ETA, looks like you have the correct coms cable.

Or go to a Motec dealer/mapper and ask them to verify it works.

It will be cheaper than buying the comms cable from Motec.
