Managed to sheer the brake nipple in my front drivers side caliper so I need to get a replacement.

Has anyone used these guys?

...and which of the many different brake calipers do you have on yours?

I know mine has the 887/888 calipers but I still don't know what discs or pads it actually uses! hehe

Oh - just assumed they would be 'standard' how can I tell?

There is a big 38 stamped into it? all the other markings are difficult to read

I wanted to get the car up and running for next weekend so I ordered anyway rolleyes It is not quite the same (Piston is a bit smaller) but does fit - I take it I shouldn't use it? On the invoice it says they have sent me Part No. EC40725 FORD ESCORT-ORION

The old one for comparison:

Assuming I should not use this caliper, any ideas on how can I work out what I have so I can order a replacement? Thanks, Simon

Its all here ,you can cross reference the EBC pads ..
If you have a choice IMHO you should always use the 278 mm disc. The calipers are designed for this size disc and the pad swept area won't get any greater because padsize stays the same. The 283 mm is slightly to big and can rub the carrier.

Why not get another caliper the same as the one you have already bought. As long as they are a pair with the same diameter pistons I do not thing it will make any difference. After all you can fit four pot calipers and they are not standard.

Why not drill out nipple, clean out swarf (fit new seals while its apart) and re-fit ? scratchchin

I've recently replaced both front calipers on my '98 450.

I cannot recommend the Brake Parts Superstore enough:

http://www.brakepartssuperstore.org.uk/contents/en...

Really detailed catalogue with good pictures and measurements of the caliper stock (piston diameter - which discs with which caliper etc).
Far better than most ebay listings.

The above link takes you to the TVR chimaera catalogue.
My calipers were an exact match and arrived within 24 hours.

That is a good fallback option but after talking to them this morning and giving a few more measurements they are sending me some Ford, Sierra, 2.0L calipers which have a 60mm piston (thought I may as well replace the both of them while I am there). The guy was really knowledgeable - fingers crossed I'll get them tomorrow.

I tried that and ballsed it up hence need a replacement rolleyes
I drilled it and used a bolt exctractor but the bolt extractor also snapped in the nipple then I lost patience. Should have went to a specialist sooner.

On the plus side I can still get £15 for it when I send it back to this company (I checked and they are still happy to recieve it?!)

If you don't mind waiting roughly a week any decent Motor Factor can send it away and have it rebuilt for less than a re-con one.

Hi Simon, as per the advice given to me in this thread - your caliper could be one of many different types. Are there any markings on yours or post a picture and see if anyone can identify it.

As 'Simon says' says mine were the 4x4 sierra brakes but yours could be different.

Hi all, I just looked through this and noticed that the new caliper has been fitted on the wrong side ( bleed nipple at the bottom). This can be dangerous as you cannot remove all the air unless it is "back bled". Just thought i would let you know if you were unaware of it

Thanks Jamie - I didn't use the pictured caliper in the end. I got a new replacement set which fitted perfectly and the nipples were the correct way up.
