Whatcar advice please chaps!
Discussion
I will be looking to get a newer car in a couple of months and thought I would ask you guys for possible recommendations. I currently drive a petrol MK4 Golf which after working out costs is currently costing me around £2000 in petrol for circa 13k miles a year. A lot of my driving is on the motorway twice a week at 60 miles each way. I'm looking to get something a bit comfier, decent levels of equipment, ideally leather seats (luxury lover
) good mpg, and something which is likely to be reliable as the Golf has only let me down once in three years of ownership. I'm thinking something diesel to lower fuel costs? I currently have two years NCB and am aged 23. Budget is maximum of £6K. I've been thinking along the lines of:
BMW E46 320d - Pricey, high mileage for budget
Audi A4 1.9 tdi 130 - same as above
Volvo S60 D5 - Reasonable purchase price, higher insurance than other two
Saab 9-3 1.9 tdi - Reasonable purchase price, cheapest insurance quote so far
Jaguar X-Type - Fairly cheap to buy, maybe old man image?
Any recommendations appreciated chaps.

i'd say volvo, or the A4.
saab tend to destroy the dual mass flywheel at 100k, and cost big bucks
and inlet manifold swirl flaps break, big bucks.
jag, just won't be worth much in 2 or 3 years and mondeo tdci engine in it tends to
go wrong a fair bit.injectors/pump issues and alternator/crank pulley tensioners play up.
merc c220cdi may be another worth looking at.

You can get a very good B5 Passat for that money and a perefctly decent one for half.
I picked up a 2004 Highline model with the 1.9tdi 130 engine. 50mpg, heated leather, plenty of space, nice and comfy.
I paid £3k for mine. Bought it with about 130k on the clock, now on it's way to 150k, use it every day for a 120 mile round-trip commute so I must trust it.

Hadn't considered the Passat. I'll have a look at them now. Sound like cracking value.I picked up a 2004 Highline model with the 1.9tdi 130 engine. 50mpg, heated leather, plenty of space, nice and comfy.

I went for the estate which holds it's value a bit more, but saloons are indeed very good value IMO.This one for example - I'd wave £2k under the sellers nose

Haven't looked into it in any detail but worth taking into account the purchase price difference between comparible spec diesel/petrol models and the likelyhood of Turbo/Fuel Pump/DPF issues on older higher mileage diesel cars compared to the relative simplicity of an N/A petrol.
Not always convinced that once you take the above into account a diesel model in your price range is actually any cheaper to run than a petrol.
Woth a look.

Thanks SWoll i'll take a deeper look into everything. Does anyone have experience of the Saab 9-3, petrol or diesel? Seriously cheap atm. Worrying about the possible flywheel issues posted earlier. Had a look earlier and to get a nice BMW or Audi within budget i'm looking at 03/04 MY.
If you want comfort then I say the Jag. Not only does it steer better than a fwd Audi (and rides, but everything rides better than Audi's these days). It'll ride better than the BMW and the others too.
The BMW is probably a more dynamic drive, but in all honesty how often will that happen on a motorway?
