Roads are so much more pretty at night.

Driving around the other night and it was great. I've decided that the best driving time is 1-3am. The windows were down and it was nice and cool, the roads were totally deserted and it actually felt good and nice to drive. It was weird how peaceful the roads were, and im really a fan of urban environments. I pulled over and could hear a pin drop. It was so nice and pretty.

Thing is, it's even nicer in the vehicle i was in. Ok, so it's RWD, but it handles like a barge, is slow, noisy, isnt the most comfortable, and really takes effort to drive after a couple of hours.

Anyone else feel like this about roads at night?

Clarkson had a massive point when he drove the Mercedes around town one night on TG. It's just so much better, and having a vehicle you enjoy driving makes it the best.

I love the roads at night too, and I agree the 1-3am window is probably the best. The serenity is great, but I'm always disturbing the peace - window down, listening to an unsilenced VTEC howling away. Giving it a boot-full through the gears never gets boring when there are no bumblers or morons to block your progress.

Agreed. Much more fun at night when there is no one about especially on the motorway when you can really press on.

I figured people on PH would only cry about stopping on the white line (although i think its not illegal) and it would detract from the topic at hand

Have to agree, everything seems so much more intense because of the isolation.

I've owned a couple of convertibles but normally prefer to drive in non-buffeted, air-conditioned comfort rather than getting sunburnt and blown around with the top down. However, that all changes on a warm summers night, going for a drive with the roof down, heater on looking up at the stars on an empty road is one of the most amazing things you can do.

Bar an overnight journey to the Ring last summer I haven't done any of this sort of driving since in near 10 years. Miss it too so next time I'm on holiday and the weather is right I think I'll go for it! Not sure if I don't prefer the countryside still though.

Might want to check your ABS as it seems your pulling over was a bit telltale

I agree though, I love an evening/night time drive. I actually somewhat prefer it on the (familiar) back roads as I can push the car a little more knowing that there's no traffic, and anything distant/round a corner will offer the headlight glare before I see the actual vehicle.

The M5 just goads me on in a sort of "you know you want to go faster than anything else" kind of way.

For two mostly* happy years my commute often included a 3am cross country blast.

I learnt the traffic light phasing and priorities of a small town so I could bimble through it at police friendly speed without stopping. Back then at that time in the morning every other car seemed to be the police, which I quite liked.

*You never forget the first time you see a deer in the road at a closing speed of 130mph.

Strangely enough, considering I'm writing this on PH and have owned some very loud cars in the past, I am looking forward to practical (from the perspective that you can "fill up" more quickly than overnight) electric sportscars so that I can enjoy night-time drives like this more. I've always felt the noise of an engine detracts from experiencing the fabulous silence at night.
